House Republicans challenge Obama on debt limit, spending

By Thomas Ferraro and Rachelle Younglai

WASHINGTON | Thu Sep 26, 2013

(Reuters) - House of Representatives Republicans on Thursday refused to give in to President Barack Obama's demands for straightforward bills to keep the government running beyond September 30 and to increase borrowing authority to avoid a historic default.

In a direct challenge to Obama, they said they will seek a one-year delay in the full implementation of the new national healthcare law known as "Obamacare" in return for raising U.S. borrowing authority by enough to let Treasury borrow through the end of 2014.

Even as some senior Republicans predicted there would be no government shutdown on October 1 or credit default next month, House Speaker John Boehner detailed a legislative path putting his chamber on a collision course with Obama and Senate Democrats.

Asked by a reporter whether the House would sign off on a government spending bill the Senate is expected to pass on Saturday, which simply extends current funding for another six weeks, Boehner replied: "I do not see that happening."

The top Republican made his remarks after a closed meeting with his rank and file.

1. Well, can you blame them? I mean it's not like Bush's wars or tax cuts are part of the debt

who, with a straight face (such as it goes), claimed that the Iraq war was fully funded, by the Obama stimulus wasn't. His logic boiled down to (and I swear I'm not exaggerating (much)), since the Iraq war was pushed by Republicans, it fell under the portion of the federal budget that was financed directly by tax revenues, but since the ARRA was pushed by Democrats, it fell under the portion that was financed through debt. Swear to God, it was that arbitrary.

I bring this up to demonstrate anecdotally just how stupid some of these people are, and just how piss-poor their logic is.

I'm pretty sure there are a lot of sock puppets paid by RW groups to post there (and many places on line including DU), but the RW propaganda campaign is successful enough that they probably no longer need them. There are enough rabid librul haters out there to do the job for free.

but I've had to wean myself off that habit.

But I hadn't heard that particular argument before. I've heard a ton of stupid shit, but this one strayed pretty far from the talking points--and was only the more remarkable for its colossal stupidity.

4. Translation: House Republicans try to extort austerity from Obama and the Dems

If I were the President, I'd threaten House repunks with conspiracy indictments if they keep trying to hold the American people hostage to their plot to defund the Affordable Care Act.

8. They will end up moving short term debt limit to about Dec/Jan. Rs again will cost America more.

For about 4 years now republicans will not allow a normal yearly cycle for our debt limit. We can't buy anything in bulk at wholesale prices because of that.

To pay retail prices for services/goods only places more profits right into the hands of those service contractors.

Republicans cost American much more, probably billions more because of the way they obstruct normal Gov. business. very un-American and corrupt imo.
