Elizabeth Warren----the Universities are in bed with the banks--let's put a target on them too!

I fully believe that the colleges and Universities' are complicit in the student debt turmoil. They have only been encouraged to take advantage of the students. In the construction industry a builder will build as long as he is financed. It seems like the education world has become so enamored with themselves that they are doing the same. So much of the proceeds go to departments that have nothing to do with education---like sports and arenas.

9. Let me see, why is that not a good idea?

Because she is a voice in the wilderness as a Senator. We need her much more there than in a place where she has to be President of all the people. Believe me, she would not be as outspoken as she is now. Rushing her when she has just begun is not a wise course of action. She would be torn to pieces by the republicans if she ran for higher office.

Three things she's overlooking.

Some sports are largely self funded. But it's hard to see that from summary budget reports. Just as the Chemistry Dept. often funds Sociology with overhead charges on extramural grants, so some sports help fund others. Money's fungible, but here that's misleading.

Athletics brings in donations from alumni. Also attention from students. Yes, money's spent on athletics. But the real question is, Does athletics self-fund once the increased donations are factored in? Again, chemistry depts. are more expensive than sociology departments. Yet they largely fund themselves.

Title IX. All that self-funding money from men's football and basketball has to be matched for women's sports. That money has to come from someplace, and it's far from entirely from men's sports. The result has been to reduce men's sports and to add funding--a sort of "overhead charge"--from non-sports sources. Remove it and I'm sure Warren would call only having self-funding sports "sexist".

This last point is rather like stipulating that a school must spend the same amount on sociology and chemistry--both in faculty, grants, equipment, and grad students. If chemistry's largely funded by extramural grants, oh, well--somebody has to cough up money for the same number of RAships, TAships, and same amount of equipment for soc.

A lot of wellness/athletic center budgets are also student funded. Often with a fee that the students have voted on and which is then covered by student loans since it's mandatory.

I'm like Warren--athletics probably figured no more in her UG and grad university life than it did for me. However, this is a silly linkage. It's also reductionist--she has a goal (no loans or very, very cheap loans) and is making what sounds like a leaky argument to provide yet more justification for it.

6. Less than 20% of top college athletic programs make money

All those millions in TV rights, tickets, licensed merchandise and donations doesn't make up for millions spent for the vast majority of universities.

5. Something is BAD WRONG.

In the late 60s, anyone could attend the State University and graduate DEBT FREE if they were willing to work a part time job.
It was even possible to own and drive a beater,
and have a few dollars left over to enjoy life while doing this.
This was The NORM.

Something STINKS....badly,
and it is sad commentary that so few of our Democratic "representatives" have the courage to STAND UP and point it out.

Thank You (again), Elizabeth Warren, for doing your job.
You have earned my respect and support.

Senator Warren is entirely correct. Students get loans to pay ever higher tuition and knowing this universities raise tuition even more.
