Grimes raises $2.5 million, besting McConnell

Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes (D) raised $2.5 million for her Senate bid between July and September, a big haul that outpaced her opponent, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).

Grimes's fundraising team includes veterans of Sen. Elizabeth Warren's 2012 campaign. The Massachusetts Democrat was last cycle's most impressive fundraiser.

After her first quarter as a Senate candidate, Grimes has about $2 million cash on hand, a Democrat familiar with her total confirmed.
McConnell raised nearly $2.3 million during the same period. He has nearly $10 million in the bank -- a hefty total that underscores the game of catch-up that Grimes has to play.
