Mary Burke brings in big guns to unseat Scott Walker

Mary Burke brings in big guns to unseat Scott Walker

by Ole Texan - Nov 07, 2013 - http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/11/07/1253786/-Mary-Burke-brings-in-big-guns-to-unseat-Scott-Walker

Mary Burke has never run for statewide office, but her deep pockets have allowed her to bring in a veteran team of handlers who have worked on some of the biggest political races in the country.

In putting together the team so quickly, Burke is signaling her ability to run a lengthy campaign to oust Gov. Scott Walker in 2014. Some of the same people who brought you President Obama's re-election campaign will do the same for Democrat Mary Burke in her run for Wisconsin governor.

She's also making it more difficult for another Democrat to jump into the race, although state Sen. Kathleen Vinehout of Alma has considered waging a grass-roots primary battle.

Jim Margolis, who handled advertising for President Barack Obama's two national campaigns, has signed on as Burke's media strategist.

Diane Feldman, who polled for Tammy Baldwin's successful U.S. Senate campaign in 2012 and Gwen Moore's 2004 race for Congress, will be Burke's pollster.

1. Saw her on Maddow last night. Disappointing.

I expected (and hoped for) a serious contender against Snot Walker, but Burke couldn't - or wouldn't - directly answer Maddow's questions about Walker and Unions etc, instead launching into stump speech talking points about "as I've traveled the state, voters repeat again and again that they want a fair deal blah blah" --- she used the same word salad non-answer response for 3 questions.

Sad that's there's no REAL "Fighting Bob" spirit left in my home state anymore.

When candidates show up in the spotlight and all they can spew is the same one-liner over and over again that doesn't say an effing thing about their character or why I should support them, I just want to crawl under the couch. The Maddow Show was a great prime-time opportunity and she proved she wasn't ready for it.

Still, I'll take her over Snot Walker any day.

The reporter pressed her on Act 10, to which she gave a response that was notable for its unresponsiveness:

Burke said this week that she does support collective bargaining for public workers, but she stopped short of saying she would change the law to give it back to them.

6. Walker is doomed no matter who the Dem candidate is. Negativism doesn't help, but, at the same time,

a few people showing so much defeatist concern on a web page will not influence the outcome or the turnout, thankfully.

9. Underestimating one's opponent, in this case Walker, is a recipe for defeat.

President Obama and Senator Baldwin inspired a strong voter turnout. Burke does not inspire anyone in the same way.

Moreover, if Burke doesn't inspire enthusiasm on this web site, what logic makes you assume that people who are not heavily involved in politics will be motivated to make the effort to go to the polls and vote for Burke?

8. Barack Obama and Tammy Baldwin were dynamic candidates. Mary Burke does not compare.

I saw the Mary Burke interview on the Rachel Maddow show. Burke's responses were uninspiring.

11. She has to learn that playing it safe does not win elections.

I felt she was not ready for that interview and was told to play it safe. Playing the middle of the road positions will not win the day against Scott Walker. She better bring a big stick and be ready to use it if she hopes to win this fight.
