(11,119 posts)when they did a story about how apple producers were spraying insecticides on apples that was harmful to humans. The story caused public school systems across the country to cancel orders for apple juice and many store chains to cancel their orders for fresh apples. Apple producers were stuck with a crop they couldn't sell and many went out of business.
Then several weeks after 60 Minutes broadcast the story, it was found that the story was not true and that 60 Minutes had been negligent to air this story. But everything seemed to get smoothed over.....they are still on the air.

(62,346 posts)I had started watching as a kid, but had problems with it through college eventually to give up.

(9,033 posts)"no disease has ever been documented that stems from legal applications of pesticides..." which reminded me strongly of the assertion that "no one died because of the incident at Three Mile Island."
Both of them come from people with an agenda and as such neither is credible. Even worse, both of them are based on the premise that we know how chemicals and radiation will affect us years in the future. And, as I recall, after the Alar scare, states started passing "food libel laws" that made it a crime to question the health consequences of eating various food products. 'Cause Dog Forbid we know what we are eating and what consequences there may be....
That said, I haven't watched 60 Minutes for years and after this Lara Logan debacle (has she been fired yet?) I won't be changing that.

(18,466 posts)it's just that, it's become yet another example of bad journalism in a sea of bad journalism.
That's right: not poor journalism; bad journalism.

(110,913 posts)I rarely remember it until it's over, anyway, unless some damned football game has dragged out the time outs for the maximum amount of time to sell beer and cars.
If you want in depth news, Frontline is better. 60 Minutes got lazy by the end of the 70s.

(50,983 posts)CBS has demonstrated that they now have an agenda which is not dissimilar to that of Fox "News".

(959 posts)after the Dan Rather business. Whatever idiosyncrasies he had, Dan Rather was a true journalist, who for over 40 years had paid his dues and CBS, knowing he was totally right about Bush, threw him and his team under the bus to placate the GOP. I have no respect for anyone there, and don't watch. My husband can't bear ABC or NBC, and lately CNN is on his nerves, so I know he catches CBS when he can, but I refuse.

(47,271 posts)Best part was in the end, the "Mail" section, included an excellent letter from Senator Sanders, about the previous week report about philanthropy.
