Louie Gohmert: Atheists should encourage prayer to boost national security

By Arturo Garcia
Thursday, December 5, 2013 20:40 EST

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) seemingly tied Christianity to U.S. national security during a bizarre speech on the House floor on Thursday, the Huffington Post reported.

“If you were completely areligious, completely atheistic, but you wanted to have a free country, and you wanted to have it safe and protected, then it would sound like, from historical purposes, that it might be a good thing to encourage those who believe in God to keep doing so,” Gohmert said. “Because when a nation’s leaders honor that God, that nation is protected. It’s only when it turns away that it falls.”

The remarks came during a speech about what Gohmert described as the continued persecution of Christians worldwide. The Tea Party congressman also referred to Israel during his remarks, which came less than a month after he criticized President Barack Obama’s administration for not using Biblical prophecy as the basis for U.S. policy in dealing with the country.

“If the God who protected Israel since its inception through many generations until they stopped honoring the god of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob — which, by the way, no country has ever fallen while it was truly honoring the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob,” Gohmert argued.

The Post also noted that Gohmert has blamed atheists for the June 2012 mass shooting at a Colorado movie theater and for the increase in suicide among military service members.

Watch Gohmert’s remarks, as posted on his YouTube channel, below.

2. Well, hey! As an atheist, I sometimes type OMG a lot, so I am doing my part!

Although truth be told is that OMG, to me, is not remotely about a deity, it is just a common exclamation of disbelief or something.
So no triumphant little See! Told ya you were religious! crapola, please. But don't you feel more safe?

A woman told everyone that she tells her niece "NOT to text OMG, because God gets mad."

That was one of the silliest statements I've ever heard anyone make. They talked about how wonderful God is at the book club, when they should have kept it in church. The books we were reading had nothing in them about religion or Christianity.

I gave up. These people substitute obsession with Jesus for thinking.

and his removal from congress and hius move to a nice, safe padded cell where he can no longer hurt himself or others.

But there must not be a god since Louie continues to hold his seat in Congress.

I often wonder what people who vote for him look like.

The thought that someone in this condition is allowed in Government is alarming.

7. Too bad we don't have some kind of sanity test before politicians could take office.

Something to show they have something more than just a passing acquiescence with reality.
A test on the meaning of the words and spirit of the wordings, of the Constitution should do it.
That should eliminate most of Congress right there.

"We the people..." Waddat mean? I'm a congress critter. Congress critters are people, so that means the Constitution is talking about me and not those unwashed Hoi polloi, whose only good act was to vote for me.

His gibberish is undecipherable. This is arguably more incoherent and idiotic than anything even Bachmann and Palin have word-vomited.

He may be, by far, the single dumbest representative in the House. Does that district feed paint chips in school lunches or something?

14. So he's saying that the various invasions of Israel were the Jews' fault?

The Babylonians, the Romans, etc., couldn't have done jack to Israel if only they'd kept honoring God?

And since they were invaded, they must not have been honoring God? Q.E.D.?

And do you know that's not pronounced "qwed", Louie?

They didn't fall for over a thousand years until Emperor Constantine changed the state religion to Christianity. Soon after it was annihilated.

I look up at the sky and pray, "Dear God, please smite Louie Gohmert."

And God answers me every morning: "Fuck you. He's your fucking problem. Don't they have elections anymore?"
