Newt Gingrich Targets ‘Elite Media’ (Again) In SC Victory Speech

After a surprisingly resounding win in South Carolina, Newt Gingrich made a victory speech that thanked his supporters while blasting the usual suspects. Those suspects included, President Obama “the most effective food stamp President in history,” the media, the “elites in New York and Washington” and radicals in San Francisco. He reminded his supporters that he does not consider himself a good debater rather, just a powerful voice for average Americans. With the audience often hooting and hollering shows of support, Gingrich portrayed the choice between himself and President Obama as a fundamental one between maintaining “classical” American values and a radical agenda seeking to turn America into a “secular European” society.

p.s. I think the media has caught onto his 'repetitive strategy' of deflecting the focus off the issues he doesn't want to talk about by attacking the journalists/media and I think he won't get away with it much longer. Even some of the talking heads at FoxNews have been bashing Newt's tactics the past two days.

2. Of course he does

Newt has been in the race for a bit. The media just helped take Romney down. Before that Perry, and before that Bachamn. Each had gaffes and personal background issues that helped build a story line. Newt is trying to insulate himself from the scrutiny that will come his way as front runner. He has been to this rodeo before. He used this technique as Speaker. "I am on your side - the "elite media" isn't" (It used to be the "liberal media", but I think "elite"is a better polite perjorative these days..) Expect this to be a theme.

3. He's Going WIth What He Knows Works...

This is modus operendi for Cadrich...the Gnewster built up his sleezy career on the backs of the "elite" media. Last night's vitriol was no different from the days he's sit in an empty house chamber and ramble for an hour. While most of us laughed, C-SPIN gave him an unfiltered pipeline into wingnut homes across the country...this led to not only his rise but that of the great unhinged wing. His bile then was "dittoed" by Rushbo and today a lot of the talking points have turned into "conventional wisdom". One of the biggest targets of the Gnewster was the "elite" and the "media" and variations of the theme. He helped push the "liberal media" bullshit that now he's building on.

He's blowing dogwhistles all over the place and when the "elite media" calls him on it, then he's become a victim and those who think likewise are victims, too. It's demogogery in its most base form...and scary to realize that there are millions in this country who not only buy this bile but are energized by it.

The rhetoric is sure to get worse in the days/weeks to come...and hopefully it will be used to drive a further wedge in a rushpublican party that is fracturing at the seems and energize Democrats.

like any demagogue who speaks with the absolutist moral certainty or a true believer. Though Paul Krugman is certainly right that Newt Gingrich “is what a stupid person thinks a smart person sounds like” and as crazy and ignorant as Gingrich's speeches are – he would certainly not be the first self-serving and self-deluded demagogue to bamboozle a nation.
