The Republican National Committee (RNC) confirmed on Monday that it had rescheduled part of its winter meeting in Washington, D.C. to allow attendees to take part in an anti-abortion protest.
In a statement
obtained by CNN, GOP spokesperson Kirsten Kukowski said that Chairman Reince Priebus had ordered the change because the annual March for Life is scheduled for January 22, just as the RNC winter meeting was set to begin.
The March for Life rally will take place on the 41st anniversary of the Supreme Courts landmark Roe v. Wade ruling, which recognized abortion rights for women.
The chairman decided it was important to give everyone an opportunity to go, the statement said.
Although some small meetings and event registration were still planned for the morning, the biggest meetings were pushed until after the noon anti-abortion rally.
The partys official 2012 platform included a human life amendment, which would criminalize abortion even in the case of rape or incest.
