Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) revealed on Thursday that he had become a congressman because he was outraged that single women were having as many as 15 babies and getting welfare checks.
If it werent for the policies in this War on Poverty declared 50 years ago, it may well be that I would not have ever run for Congress, Gohmert said during a Wednesday night speech on the House floor. Because what got me thinking about it first as a state district judge back in Texas was seeing more and more young women, single women coming before me single moms charged with welfare fraud.
The Texas Republican said that women discovered that the government will send you a check for every baby you have out of wedlock.
One women had had 15 kids, didnt even know where they all were, that was the most that I ever dealt with, Gohmert explained. It began to really eat away with me that in the 60s the federal government, desiring to help poor moms who were dealing with deadbeat dads, decided, Well help, well give a check for every child you can have out of wedlock.
The War on Poverty has been a disaster, he insisted. Why do the children have to suffer for the ignorance and stupidity of the government and those who meant well but just did stupid things? Its tragic.

Have you ever been responsible for a baby? This is not that you put it in a corner, run to the bank with the check and forget about it.
You have to feed him/her (hereafter referred to as "it" , change it, calm it, stop it from crying, etc.
You have to do this for YEARS and after that you have them around your house and you have to feed them and put up with them.
Trust me, I love children but this is where "Gomer" (no insult intended for our beloved Jim Nabors) loses it.
He thinks women would go through 9 months of pregnancy, endure a birth and have responsibility for the child for years and years for a few extra dollars a year?
He is truly stupid.

(20,131 posts)Traditional welfare pretty much went away during the Clinton administration. Yes, there is still TANF, but that's TEMPORARY Aid for Needy Families. The adult portion of it is for a maximum of 3 years and each additional child gets a whopping $64 a month maximum. For example, a single mom with 4 kids in Texas would get $370 a month from TANF. Of course, for the last 20 years, poor parents can get Earned Income Credit. That, with SNAP and Medicaid.

(15,220 posts)This man is a complete idiot and I despise just about everything that comes out of his stupid, ill-informed mouth.
There are many points that are WRONG with what he says here, but the one that jumped out at me is his total and utter lack of anything suggesting that he believes the fathers of these children that he is referring to are in any way responsible.
Yeah, I know, Louie. When a man screws around, you slap him on the back and congratulate him. If a woman has sex - she's a whore.
I'm tired of this old, tired attitude!

He's not my Congresscretin but his district borders mine. My rep is Joe Barton, oil company whore.
Children need to be fed regardless of who their parents are. And I bet he's a pro-life hypocrite.
