Maryland Gov. Martin OMalley (D) on Sunday lashed out at Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) for thinking he could multiply the bread and fishes like Jesus Christ by limiting the amount of federal funds available to help hungry children.
Last week, Rubio declared former President Lyndon B. Johnsons War on Poverty a failure and proposed ending most federal social saftey net programs and replacing them with block grants to the states. Experts argued that the current programs like unemployment benefits and food stamps are counter-cyclical in that they increase during recessions, something that would end under Rubios proposal.
What hes saying is, Well send you less money because this year we want to cut dollars to feed hungry children, OMalley told CNNs Candy Crowley on Sunday. The answers to feeding hungry children is not fewer dollars to feed hungry children, its to do more We believe in doing more of the things that actually work, not in this cynical shell game of cap and block grant and then dismantle.
If your goal is to dismantle government for some ideological purpose then it doesnt work, he added. But this notion that somehow that by capping the dollars that the federal government puts into feeding hungry children that somehow that will miraculously multiply the bread and fishes is poppycock, and its part of this ideology that weve been suffering from and our economy has been suffering from.
What we need to do is enact policies that actually help our middle class rather than follow this ideology of dismantling Washington and getting Washington out of everything we do. Were all in this together and we need our national government.

(2,062 posts)I think he needs not to run for President, I believe he needs to get his feet into the Senate, perhaps replacing Barbara Mikulski when she's ready to go. He has not been that great of a governor. (IMO), but way better then some others...

(15,366 posts)a BIG fan of MM.
While having him run for Mikulski's seat - when and if she retires - is not at all a bad idea, that certainly would not preclude a campaign for the Presidency. So far as I know, however, Mikulski's planning to stay for awhile longer and MM is too good a person/politician to be left waiting in the wings.
Frankly, if a run for the Presidency doesn't pan out for him in the next cycle, I would love to see him named to head the DNC. He was an early supporter of Howard Dean's Presidential aspirations, has a lot of Dean's attributes and understands how one must create and maintain networks not only during Presidential elections but also during the off-years.
As far as his governorship goes, just who do you believe has actually been a better MD gov? All things considered, I believe that MM has done an excellent job. He is certainly head and shoulders above any MD gov (Dem or Rep) I've experienced since 1981 when I first became a state resident and he is the complete opposite of Erlich (R) who was his most recent adversary.
It is also true that western and Eastern Shore MD have gotten much more RW in recent years. So if you are from those areas, you likely have a much different opinion of him than those of us from metropolitan areas (or as in my case, an expat). At least you are certainly privy to lots of hate speech about him there.

(22,000 posts)These so called "christians" (with a small "c" don't give a shit about the poor and middle class. They may have duped some into thinking that (teabaggers) because they are the uninformed who simply repeat what they watch on Fox News. Education should only be for the rich according to them. Why would they want anyone to actually improve themselves and do better? It's against their own self-interest. The new Republican motto should be "let'em starve, let'em die, keep them'em down, and make'em cry".
