US diplomats in India: "It's the vegetarians that are doing the raping, not the meat eaters."

An American couple apparently didn’t master the art of handling delicate matters when they moved to India about a few years ago to work in the U.S. Embassy. The Americans — who were expelled from India as retaliation for the United States deporting Indian envoy Devyani Khobragade — openly mocked their host country for its customs and poverty, The Times of India reported.

Wayne May, head of security for the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, and his wife, Alicia Muller May, the embassy’s community liaison officer, posted embarrassing comments about India on social media, calling it “bizarre” and a “zoo,” during their three-year stint there. The wife, 54, wrote in one disturbing Facebook post that Indian vegetarians were behind the sexual assaults plaguing the country.

"It's the vegetarians that are doing the raping, not the meat eaters. This place is just so bizarre," Alicia Muller May wrote in 2012, according to the Times. "Applies only to Indians, not westerners!” she added.

Wayne May, who was slated to end his post in February, posted offensive musings and photos about cattle, which Hindus consider sacred.

“No eating the sacred cows,” he wrote in June 2010, adding, “One week in country and I already miss steak.”

His meat-starved wife agreed, writing a few months later, “Had real American Hamburgers for dinner last night. A friend smuggled them in his suitcase.”

couple are very typical of much of the 'diplomatic' staff at our Embassies and Consulates around the world. I still remember when a very junior Vice Consul attached to our Embassy in Quito (Consulates handle visa applications for non US citizens) decided to try his newly acquired Spanish language skills (i.e. zero) by asking the daughter of one of Ecuador's former Presidents (and also later head of the Organization of American States and a great champion of the U.S.) who was applying for a Tourist Visa to take the family to Disneyworld if she was a "puta" (whore).

applicants (assuming it fits) is "Are you going to the U.S. for the purpose of engaging in prostitution?". Our bright young man decided to show off his mastery of Spanish by using his newly learned Spanish "Are you a puta"? Went over real well - he was on a plane back to the US w/in 48 hours. The sad part of this tale is that this type of behavior by our diplomats in Latin America is not at all uncommon. Any American seeing how decent people who are just trying to take the kids to Disney World are treated in our Consulates would be outraged.

When I argued with a senior US Diplomat about some of the ways that people applying for visas to the US were being treated in our Consulate, he told me that I was "going native".
