CAITLIN MACNEAL JANUARY 22, 2014, 1:23 PM EST
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) on Tuesday said that President Obama's approach to the conflict in Syria makes him a lesser president than even Jimmy Carter.
"I have never seen anything like this in my life. I thought Jimmy Carter was bad, but he pales in comparison to this president in my view," he said in an interview on Phoenix radio station KFYI.
McCain said that situation in Syria has become a regional conflict and that al Qaeda-affiliated groups have become involved.
"It is spreading throughout the region, and sooner or later it will affect the United States of America if you allow a place to become a base for al Qaeda," he said. "We now have thousands of fighters of this radical, extremist, al-Qaida affiliated people pouring in from all over the world into Syria, fighting against our guys, who are the good guys and also not doing much fighting against Bashar Assad."

(70,490 posts)You lost the election almost 6 years ago. You do not get to
make foreign policy. Syria is not a threat to the United States.
Syria is getting rid of it's chemical weapons. America does not
need to get involved in a civil war in the middle east.
God Damn it we already have a Sec. of State his name is John Kerry
and he is doing a good job.
Remember what happened last time you visited Syria?

(13,091 posts)McCain you are a disgrace.
You have been a disgrace for a long time.
You have latched on to the government teat and you show no signs of letting go.
Your opinion means zero, nada, nil, nothing to me.
You unleashed Sarah Palin on this country.
The crazies flocked to her like flies to shit.
The country has been in a death spiral since the Bush administration.
You sicken me.

(59,501 posts)have been firmly rejected in the last year. You can see his anguish in his comments - especially this one and the one that Kerry is a "wrecking ball" of American foreign policy. You see in this one, the Republican CW - that unfortunately gained too much currency among Democrats - that Jimmy Carter was a disaster. (It amazes me that 2004 was the first convention he spoke at after 1980.) Sadly, I bet it takes less time for the Republicans to rehabilitate GWB.
The silver lining in this comment is that it does make clear that President Obama HAS changed America's foreign policy. Syria is a mess, but it is certainly not clear what the US should or could do militarily. Given that the Geneva talks just started why is it not unpatriotic for McCain to be trying to gain political ground by attacking the President? This should be a point where he should do whatever he could to help diplomacy succeed.
The funny thing is that in the Iran negotiations (not the Syrian ones), it might be the world achieves the reset of the Middle East that the neocons thought they could create by regime change in Iraq. It might be that his real fear is that if Obama and the world succeed, that whole movement will be forever discredited (beyond where it is now).

(24,406 posts)but if what he is saying is true, what does that make him- having lost to "worse-than-Carter" Obama? BTW it's ALWAYS easier to sit on the sidelines and snipe at the people actually in charge- not him- of making decisions of how, when, and where we should get involved.............

(1,054 posts)He lost badly to Obama and he still can't believe it. McCain's only response to every foreign problem is war, while Obama gives negotiations a chance.
