MSNBC apologizes for tweet taunting conservatives over Cheerios Super Bowl ad starring biracial child, RNC calls for boycott

The Republican National Committee is calling for supporters to boycott MSNBC, after the network posted a tweet taunting conservatives over the Cheerios ad starring an interracial family that will air during the Super Bowl.

"Maybe the rightwing will hate it, but everyone else will go awww: the adorable new #Cheerios ad w/ biracial family," read a tweet posted late Wednesday on the MSNBC account, providing a link to a short article on the news website about the ad.

MSNBC apologized for the "offensive live tweet" and then deleted the message.

"The Cheerios tweet from @msnbc was dumb, offensive and we've taken it down. That's not who we are at msnbc," MSNBC.com Executive Editor Richard Wolffe tweeted.

Comcast/MSBNC is not it. It's owned by a huge corporation and it shills for corporate interests and it lies down and wimps out over every least little thing. It pretends to be progressive just to try to get ratings and profits but incidents like this prove is is not. It's pathetic.

There was no need for an apology; the tweet was the truth, and it was cute. I think they just did it to placate Reince- whatever!

It seems odd that I find this apology so insulting. I guess after the firing of Martin Bashir, the shaming of Melissa Harris-Perry and now the overreaction to this tweet I can no longer in good conscious support the network that would so easily buckle to the RNC. I thought MSNBC was actually serious about its progressive target audience but now I see it is just milking progressives and not really in to defending them or our causes.

It will free up a lot of my time so it isn't all a lost.

It used to be my go-to for news & 'just something to watch'. Over the past year, their content is aggrivating (do Matthews, Sharpton, Maddow AND O Donnell all really need to cover THE EXACT SAME STORY??) and their new hosts don't do anything for me.

Chris Hayes makes me want a valium. Homeboy's really wound up tight.
I like Rev Al but he's still so rough around the edges, sometimes it's hard to watch.
Big Ed is the left's version of Glenn Beck - flowcharts and all.
MHP seems really full of herself, sorta condescending.

And all the DAMN commercials!! 30-second teaser/lead in sessions followed by 7 minutes of commercials just plain pisses me off.

threatening to throw a reporter over the balcony? And BTW, it was neither dumb nor offensive...what's dumb and offensive is that it is true...and all "the Wings" know it.

You can guarantee the company, the actors, everyone with anything to do with that ad will be boycotted or threatened in some way by the anti-tolerance Nutters.

So why should MSNBC back down from telling the truth? I thought that's what news channels were supposed to do ...

They were right. The right wing made a big deal of the first commercial. Nothing to apologize for.
