The Right loves him because they agree with his rhetoric and his backwards ideals, and the left loves him as a form of comic relief and because we see him as someone who can demonstrate to everyone else how far out there the GOP has become in comparison to Democrats.

However Nugent has his followers and Abbott doesn't seem to be hurt by his appearance with him.

In fact it looks like Abbott has increased his lead over Davis.

I think proclaiming the demise of the Tea Party is premature.

17% of Texas voters are undecided.

But this is still Texas, and Abbott's electoral history indicates that he's pretty popular. Davis is going to have a tough campaign if she's going to win.

Personally, I agree with the OP that if you're a swing Voter in Texas, and you see Abbott hanging around with an ass-clown like Nugent, it can't be doing him any favors. And that WILL matter in a close election.
