Wisconsin Senate approves bill restricting early voting

Voter rights have become a political and racial flash point across the United States. Democrats generally oppose measures that restrict voting, saying they disenfranchise minorities and young people such as college students. Many Republicans back them, saying they are needed to combat voter fraud.

The bill effectively bans handing in ballots on weekends. It requires that such absentee voting take place on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and imposes a maximum 45 hours a week for a municipality to accept those ballots.

“The decision by Republicans to limit voter rights is an insult to working families and seniors and an infringement on our freedom to vote,” she said in a statement.

Wouldn't a vote by mail option be an optimal choice if they were truly concerned about labor costs? LonePirate Mar 2014 #1

Or at least to Republicans.

Why do these kind of bills- along with abortion bills, gun bills, and voting restriction bills- seem to FLY right through state legislatures like knives through hot butter and we can't get votes on jobs bills? Don't any other legislatures have filibusters or other procedural maneuvers like what the Senate (and to a lesser extent, the House) has? Democrats here in Indiana- at least before their numbers got cut down to virtually nothing- denied the Republicans quorum once in a while to hold off "Right to Work". The Dems in Texas pulled a similar gambit to delay redistricting. Can't Dems throw some more sand in the gears elsewhere?
