Why Democrats Like Paul Ryan’s Budget
Rep. Paul Ryan (R., Wis.) is one of Democrats favorite campaign allies. They hate his conservative policies but love to rally the party faithful by spotlighting them.
Thats why Rep. Steve Israel (D., N.Y.), chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Wednesday welcomed with open arms Tuesdays release of the new Ryan budget. He told reporters Wednesday that it could strengthen Democrats position in a shaky political environmentone where problems with the health-care law are dogging Democrats around the country.
Its a tough climate for us right now, but I believe that this Republican budget helps change the narrative by reminding voters whos got their backs, Mr. Israel said. They should have just printed a middle finger to the middle class on page one of this budget; that is how this budget treats middle class families.
The DCCC Wednesday launched a new campaign called Battleground: Middle Class featuring ads and other efforts to attack the GOP budget proposals to revamp Medicare, replace Medicaid with state block grants, and cut spending in domestic programs throughout the budget.
With Republican candidates and party officials determined to keep the focus on the Affordable Care Act, Mr. Israel said he believed the climate will change on the publics view of the law. He said Democrats will not ignore it, but instead will do more to focus on the damage that would be done by Republicans push to repeal it altogether.
