2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumOne Reason the Democratic Candidates lose elections is the Conservative leaning media
The United States MSM is really conservative orientated. Their organizational policies really promote Republican candidates. For example:
What is up with MSNBC and their bizarro campaign finance policies? Apparently Democratic pundits aren't allowed to appear at fundraising events, but conservatives are.
The DNC is up in arms over Joe Scarborough being allowed to appear at the Cheshire County Republican Lincoln Day Dinner, while they nixed Ed Shultz's planned appearance at Broward County Democrats' fundraiser in Florida:
The Democratic National Committee's top spokesperson has sent a letter to MSNBC President Phil Griffin, accusing the network of a "double standard" after its decision to allow host Joe Scarborough, a Republican, to speak at what is, for all intents and purposes, a Republican fundraiser.

(9,796 posts)All of your national media is owned by corporations (just six corporations, actually) and corporations generally tend to be conservative.

(7,142 posts)I haven't posted much on DU but I have posted many times about the biggest lie out there being the media is liberal. The owners of MSNBC are not liberal. COMCAST and GE are not liberal. The owners of MSNBC control the narrative, yes, they allow their newscasts to put a liberal spin on the narrative, but they control the narrative. I love Ed Schultz and watch him a lot, but if you want to see what Rush Limbaugh just said, or what John Boehner just said, or what Rand Paul just said, all you have to do is watch big Ed.
Of msnbc's broadcasters, Rachel Maddow and Chris Hayes are getting close to violating the "stick to the narrative theme." They better be careful, just ask;
Phil Donahue (NBC)
Keith Olbermann
Cenk Uygur
Dylan Ratigan

Yes, the fact that the M$M is controlled by 6 multi-national corporations is BIG. It is a big reason that Dems are behind the 8 ball.
No network recently covered the Seymour Hersh expose about who really gassed the Syrian people. That is big news if true, but no coverage. Even here, on DU, I saw one post about it, but it quickly died.
For crying out loud, Dems can't even run on the ACA, a remarkable achievement, because the M$M has demonized it.
OK, I'm done, eom.

Get Out the Vote.
Motivate the people who are naturally Democratic voters: women, men, whites, black, latinos, LBGT, straight, white collar, blue collar, just about everbody except the 1% and the religious zealots.
Point out to them at every opportunity that their everyday rights are at stake. Ask them how many guns has Obama confiscated compared to women's health clinics closed by Republicans and voting days eliminated?

(1,309 posts)not enough. Maybe we need to identify the DINOs. Maybe we lose when DINOs are indistinguishable from corporatist Republicans. As a progressive and a populist, I see a lot to vilify.
Everyone knows the real battle is about who gets the money and if Democrats are coporatists like so many third way Democrats the people lose.

(193 posts)while GOP smears its opponents we never do the same.
Like we have Dems running about fixing the ACA. Why not run saying the Republican wants to raise health cost on seniors. Because if they end the ACA thats what would happen. Dont mention ACA just show scary commercials about older people paying more that cant afford it

(17,301 posts)I thought liberals were the Democratic party's base, but the party purposely antagonizes them. President Obama, on national TV, said he was a moderate RepubliCON. I wish he had told us that before 2008. And all the RepubliCON appointments he made not to mention the insults his staff throws at liberals. Remember when President Obama made a joke out of the push to legalize marijuana?
RepubliCONS seem to cater to their base while Democratic leaders seem to ignore and insult their base. Yet every election the Democratic leaders are out there trying to pretend they are liberal to get our vote.
Conservative media is a big problem but instead of barring Fox Noise, because they are nothing more than the media arm of the RepubliCON party, Obama bowed down to pressure and allowed them to act as if they are a news organization.

(10,893 posts)I don't feel antagonized or ignored by Democrats. I know that they've been the ones out there trying to end wars, raise the minimum wage, trying to preserve the right to vote, and expanding access to health care. The people who I do feel antagonized by are the GOP. They are doing absolutely nothing to push the country forward, and they constantly waste time and taxpayer money BSing with "Benghazi" hearings, blocking jobs bills, and partaking in countless attempts to repeal health care reform.
Also, the purpose of the "moderate Republican" comment Obama made was to illustrate how extreme the GOP has become in recent decades and how they no longer support common-sense policies that they once did in the past. Back during the Eisenhower days, he supported higher taxes on the rich and limiting the military industrial complex. Nixon created the EPA. Reagan raised taxes 11 times (albeit also on the poor). Nowadays...good luck finding any Republicans who will go along with any of those policies.
Aside from the 2010 elections, though, they haven't fared so well because of shrinking their tent and being so ideologically-pure. With the Democratic Party, we're a big-tent party. Because moderates make up most of the country's electorate, we need them in order to win elections (especially in more conservative-leaning areas).

(7,299 posts).......the MSM has a liberal bias. These corporations prefer the color green over red or blue. That's what ultimately drives them. The wing nuts always appear weak and wimpish when they cry about the media. I would highly suggest that the Left does not borrow that play out of the wing nut play book.

Just TALK, list facts, tell the truth. Forget the 'freedom' idiocy, "gotta help the middle class,' and all that stuff the dopes talk about. Tell people where their jobs and money is REALLY going.. and.. WHY!
"Course, one problem is that politics has moved so far right, most dems are republicans in blue clothes, but that's another story.

(9,350 posts)I do not think the media is the real problem for the Democratic Party. I think the real problem is that Democrats do not promote their ideas like the Republicans. Democrats need to talk about their ideas more and draw greater comparisons between themselves and Republicans. They need to tell people what Democratic ideas have done in the past and what Democratic ideas can do in the future. They also need to explain to the American people what will happen if Republicans are elected and Republican ideas get enacted.
