Log Cabin Republicans On Obama: ‘Offensive And Callous’

Log Cabin Republicans On Obama: ‘Offensive And Callous’

The Log Cabin Republicans issued the following statement on news of President Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage:

“That the president has chosen today, when LGBT Americans are mourning the passage of Amendment One, to finally speak up for marriage equality is offensive and callous,” said R. Clarke Cooper, Log Cabin Republicans Executive Director. “Log Cabin Republicans appreciate that President Obama has finally come in line with leaders like Vice President Dick Cheney on this issue, but LGBT Americans are right to be angry that this calculated announcement comes too late to be of any use to the people of North Carolina, or any of the other states that have addressed this issue on his watch. This administration has manipulated LGBT families for political gain as much as anybody, and after his campaign’s ridiculous contortions to deny support for marriage equality this week he does not deserve praise for an announcement that comes a day late and a dollar short.”

There was nothing this president, or any other president could have done to change yesterday's results. I know! I live here! What has to happen is people have to hold these nuts in their state legislatures accountable, and stop scapegoating the president for everything that's fucked up in their lives. I wonder how many of these nutty assed teabaggers that have taken over our state & local governments were backed by the Log Cabin Republicans? And even if they didn't endorse them...Silence is consent. Did they issue a press release when this abomination was drafted by the members of their own party?

I've said this before, and I'll say it again for those who have rushed to lay this all at the steps of the WH. Many of us listened to angry liberal activists, in the midterms, who told us how "disillusioned" we should all be because everything wasn't accomplished in 18 mos., so we sat home. We're now paying for that "disillusionment" in ways we never thought imaginable.

To be quite honest, the things contained in this press release were actually said (in so many words) right here on this board last night. Stuff like "who cares what he thinks"? "Screw him"! All this would be understandable if we didn't know his stance on the issue when we voted for him in '08. We did know! His "evolution" is completed. And I think he deserves credit as I don't think any other sitting president in the history of this country has made such a declaration. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

My consolation is that LBJ, who signed the CRA, lamented that in doing so, he'd lost the South for a generation, but it was the right thing to do. This, too, may be political suicide, but it was the right thing to do. This will definitely make some swing states more difficult to win, which is why I don't understand the venom directed at this president.

I totally agree about the "disillusionment" during the midterm elections. So many people have a single hot-button issue and if something doesn't get done about that issue RIGHT NOW they're pissed.

As far as the Log Cabin Republicans I also don't understand them. The repub party has nothing for them, especially now that the teabaggers have taken over.

heard a rational explanation of Log Cabin Republicans, nor for that matter, a black or hispanic republican. Whether the Grand Old Party ever admits it or not, they are the party of the white power structure of old, and they feel threatened. Who would want to be a part of an established party, who at their very core, hate you & everything that makes you who you are?

What pisses me off most is that LCR's sit on the sidelines, while progressives like Pres. Obama fight for their rights, but then they turn around and work their asses off for people who despise them. I seriously don't get it.

They've done nothing but bash President Obama despite being the most LGBT-friendly POTUS in modern history yet they spend relatively little time (any?) attacking the party that is not only NOT in favor of any equality/rights for LGBT persons (like, um, themselves) but are trying to get rid of LGBT-friendly laws that are already on the books. They are the very definition of insanity and I seriously hope that nobody outside of their own organization takes them seriously.

I do not understand the Log Cabin Republicans any more than I would understand if a black man wanted to join Aryan Nation or Stormfront.

WTF? Seriously, guys. The GOPers hate you. They think you're perverted and weird. They don't think you should have basic civil rights - they don't think that you should be protected from being bullied in school, or that you should be able to join the military or teach children, let alone get married.

Why do you support them?

Because you're just a bunch of greedy assholes who'd sell your own civil rights for a tax break?

or burn down as far as I'm concerned. Let it bury or char those greedy idiots. After all, it's very unlikely you're gay and a republican unless you're wealthy - very wealthy...

Seriously, this criticism makes about as much sense as the comments I saw on facebook - that Obama is doing this for "political reasons". What political reasons are those? Especially after he took exactly the OPPOSITE view of a majority that voted in a major swing state? Yeah, I know gays make up a huge % of the population in VA, NC, OH, and FL... That's why he endorsed this. BTW, I think all of those states have anti-gay marriage amendments passed.

I'm really fucking sick of people (especially some liberals) not giving the president credit he deserves on this. It was a ballsy move - one that could potentially cost him several swing states.

The Log Cabin Republicans have to be willing to give their votes and support to the political party most likely to support their agenda. Until the Log Cabin Republicans are willing to fight their leaders with their money and voting power they will never be considered a threat to the GOP power base.
