2016 Postmortem

So it's all the rage now to talk about Mayor Julián Castro of San Antonio, TX being considered for new HUD Secretary.
Recall, he did keynote or major speech at 2012 Dem Convention.
I predict Hillary chooses him as her VP!
You heard it here 1st!!

(6,262 posts)Also think whoever the Rethug nominee is, a minority will be picked for VP. Unless it's Jebbie, who can trot out his family at every chance.

(7,596 posts)Why this rush to put him on a national ticket and to pair him up with a 69-year-old Hillary? No thanks.
He's not even 40 yet, for fuck's sake. He can wait.

(24,718 posts)I think his youth would be a great balance to Hillary - especiallay in terms of electability.

(1,399 posts)It's too soon, and he'd have less than 2 years in a cabinet position that's not the cushiest on your resume if you want to run for president (isn't that the same position former SA mayor Henry Cisneros had in the 90s?)
For him it's a very smart move, with Texas probably staying red for the next few years this gets him to a national level position without having to run for statewide office. If he does well as HUD secretary he could move up to a better position in a Clinton cabinet (or whoever the next Democratic president may be). After that he might be ready to step up and run as VP or senator in a bluer Texas. Experience as VP or senator should give him plenty of experience to run for the Big One.

(24,394 posts)he is already the subject of a hit "news" piece from Politico about questions about his city's use of HUD funds while he has been mayor (though it is somewhat unclear what he did wrong).

"It is too early to be focusing on the 2016 presidential race, and it is way too early to be discussing possible vice presidential nominees." Bull. If he decided to start campaigning nationally for Democrats /Hillary, she'd be more than golden. The Hispanic vote is not to be taken for granted. If the Republican candidate picks Rubio, we've got a problem. But the Cabinet position sounds good, as well. Gives him Obama's blessing.
I've read it on here way too many times. Anyone who thinks the Koch Brothers, Karl Rove and Big Money aren't looking to 2024 and beyond, doesn't understand politics, influence, national financing and the back-room dealing and organizing that inevitably goes into every campaign.

(32,006 posts)if he is being vetted for future roles. He'll be 40 in September. If I were him I'd take whatever is offered in terms of cabinet positions/VP - whatever. I wouldn't run from Texas for president until 2024. 10 years from now he's approaching 50 and Texas is solidly in play (demographics). He's a very smart guy and has done a great job with San Antonio. I have no doubt he'll be running for president eventually.
