The Hill - "CDC funds 'moving in the wrong direction,' Casey says"

WaPo has run a fact checker arguing that the idea that Republican demanded budget cuts are to blame for the lack of resources to respond to the Ebola threat is a lie.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/fact-checker/wp/2014/10/15/the-absurd-claim-that-only-republicans-are-to-blame-for-cuts-to-ebola-research/

Why? Because Democrats agreed to the sequester, which was supposed to set the stage for some tax increases to off-set the cuts. Of course, Republicans later claimed credit for the sequester, but in times like this, they deny that they are responsible for the cuts. The problem with this so-called fact checker is that it blatantly ignores that we have a draconian GOP dominated House that has been demanding even bigger budget cuts. It also ignores that Democrats have routinely proposed larger budgets that have always been shot down by Republicans in order to protect lower taxes to the rich.

In other words, WaPo has gone beyond false equivalency and is blaming Democrats for not saving Republicans from themselves. It is this type of corporate biased journalism that is undercutting the ability of our Democracy to operate or respond to crisis in an intelligent fashion.

Sen. Bob Casey Jr. (D-Pa.) on Monday expressed concern over funding the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) amid the Ebola outbreak.

On MSNBC’s “Jose Diaz-Balart,” Casey noted that the CDC budget has been cut by more than $500 million in recent years.

“That's moving in the wrong direction. I think sequestration is a problem as well,” he said. “This funding issue is real, and we’ve got to address that.”

Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), ranking member on the House Budget Committee, said last Thursday on CNN that there’s “no doubt” healthcare cuts have made it more difficult to respond to the Ebola epidemic.
