Pa. Supreme Court suspends Justice McCaffery
HARRISBURG -- Seamus McCaffery, the state Supreme Court justice entangled in a controversy over pornographic emails and accusations he allegedly tried to blackmail a fellow justice, has been "relieved ...of his responsibilities" as a justice, according to an order the court issued this afternoon.
The order cited the "intense media attention" of several issues that "impact greatly upon the integrity of the judicial system." Justice McCaffery could not be reached for comment tonight.
The order comes three days after Justice J. Michael Eakin, a Republican, publicly accused Democratic Justice McCaffery of trying to strong-arm Justice Eakin into a showdown with Chief Justice Ronald Castille.
If Justice Eakin didnt sway the chief justice and cause [him] to retract his media statements of the prior day, Justice McCaffery would cause the release of lewd and racist emails that had been sent to Justice Eakins private email account in 2010.
