Hillary Clinton says businesses don’t create jobs. Uh-oh. (+video)

Washington — [Updated 2:40 p.m.] Hillary Rodham Clinton’s recent comment about trickle-down economics has launched a war of spin – and an effort Monday by Mrs. Clinton to correct herself.

First, here’s what the likely 2016 presidential candidate said at a campaign event last Friday for Martha Coakley, the Massachusetts Democratic gubernatorial candidate:

Don’t let anybody tell you that it’s corporations and businesses that create jobs,” former Secretary of State Clinton said in Boston. “You know that old theory, trickle-down economics. That has been tried, that has failed. It has failed rather spectacularly. One of the things my husband says when people say, ‘What did you bring to Washington?’ He says, ‘I brought arithmetic.’

...

The 2016 race is upon us. Everything Clinton says in public will be parsed within an inch of its life -- and already is. Politicians often plead, “Out of context,” when caught saying something off-key. But in the sound-bite reality of political life, Clinton may find it easier just to make sure everything she says, sentence by sentence, sounds good on its own.

That last line doesn't come off right, the idea that Clinton should "watch what she says" I find to be reprehensible. We know what Clinton was saying, taking a sound-byte and parsing it wrong will be the tactic coming up, it is already used with Obama. Clinton needs to own what she said, and make sure that people who are pretending she said something different are called out on their BS.

Hi,

I think it's great that women are making strides in politics. Clinton is a good candidate and has great ideas, but I'd prefer to see someone younger who can easily relate to the young populace. She's over the age of 65 - how is she going to relate to young people who are looking to get employed.

I agree with you, though not so much due to physical age as to her aged ideas.

They're old ideas, proven not to work.

They are Walmart and Tata and Outsourcing Globalist ideas, and they DON'T lift us all.

Only when you lift the low and the middle classes will the country rise together.

Funny, her bashing trickle down and borrowing a Warren line, about who built what.

I'm done with her.

Bill Clinton has defended corporations that move overseas to avoid paying taxes.

This is preview of her campagin. She will start talking progressive to win nomination. If she doesn't drop the line against whoever GOP runs it will go out the door If she was In white house and back to her to right of obama on Corporates attitude.

I am anyone but hillary for nomination. My preference would be eather elizabeth warren or Bernie Sanders run In primarys.

If not for the 22nd amendment, they could've found a stripper in the oval office and he still would've had a third term by a blowout.

She may not be able to resist the BS parsing of her words. She has a family to support. She's almost a hundred millionaire. It's maybe not her goal. We'll see.

Then, she's spent her entire post-college life as a person of the people, civilly inclined. Hard to see.

.... what HRC was trying to say is that it is consumers (demand) that 'creates' jobs not producers (supply). And on that point I would agree and all of our legislators orientation has been towards helping producers and not consumers.

But of course she said it quite poorly and also her husband was among the worst offenders in this regard so invoking his legacy is pretty puzzling.

It's clearly in regards to trickle down economics, but it's easily parsed to be anti-business. Despite that 99% of empowers in the US wouldn't be affected by a tax hike.

I own a small business. I've seen stats that say 90% of the jobs in the US are with small businesses. The Repubs can give me all the tax breaks they want, I'll never hire people to stand around & do nothing. The only time I hire is when there's demand for my product, CONSUMERS create those jobs.

It's basic demand-based economics (how it really works) vs Repub supply-side (trickle down) economics, which doesn't work & has hurt the economy every time it's been tried.

Consumers need jobs & a good wage to drive demand, which creates hiring. The way things are now, people have so little extra income, it's directly hurting my business. I have 3 jobs I could be working on but people don't have the money right now. The work I'm doing now, I'm letting the customer pay a little bit each week. I know my business would do better if the minimum wage was raised, it might double my gross revenue, because so many more people would be able to afford my services.
