2016 Postmortem

This is the fun of Senate races - they are every 6 years which means anything goes when it comes to who stays in and who goes.
Last time this cycle was up for re-election was 2008 when Obama first ran for president and we had a record number of new voters sign up for this historical vote. High voter turn outs will ALWAYS favor Democrats because in the end there is more of us then there are Republicans. After that cycle back in 2008 we actually had 58 Democrats and 2 independants and riding a high tide of excitement.
Six years later we had to expect some of those seats to be pretty darn risky. Mid-terms always favor Republicans because let's face it, there is more of us than then but they are much more reliable voters. Plus in 6 years we've gerrymandered the states to death AND overturned Citizens United which basically means a bunch of wealthy fucks can buy an election spending unlimited cash.
The good news is this - nothing is going to change the next two years because let's face it, the house already has stalled doing any work now the senate can do just the same and eventually the public is going to get fed up and realize that the US Congress is a joke.
Plus it will be 2016 and if we can get a dynamic Democrat on the ticket then the voters will turn out and we will see many of those 2010 GOP senators booted from office.
What goes down comes back up.
But let's face it the only way this rollercoaster will ever end is getting rid of gerrymandering and dark money.

(10,650 posts)The republicans are in control and they aren't going to change those. It will take a long, long time for things to change for the better.
You have concentrated on the Senate, but it is in the states where the Democrats future has been gutted. Those governor races were a DISASTER.

(95,337 posts)Alito and Scalia are both getting up there in age. I can't imagine either of them lasting 4-8 if another Democrat can win as President. If we can win 2016 then we have a shot of getting the gerrymandering and dark money fixed.
That's the only solution else you are right we are pretty screwed.
And maybe we need to stop worrying about DC and start worrying locally. Because in the end if a Republican does win in 2016 then I feel at least for me I'm in a safely blue state.
But others out there, not so much. We need to think locally with these elections!

(11,911 posts)I thought Kent went blue in 2012? If it's turning red, we need to fix that. Maybe there's enough population in NCC to counter, but it's something we'll all have to really keep an eye on.

(95,337 posts)Kent is a purple county. It'll go blue during presidental elections and go back red at mid-terms.
Luckily there are enough Democrats in New Castle to make up the difference. But I figured we were doomed with our Treasurer race after that issue with Chip Flowers, which I kinda thought was kinda a witch hunt. I thought Chip had a future with the DelDems but in the end he kinda tanked the race when he held on for so long after the 'scandal' broke out.
