John Heilemann: "If Gingrich wins Florida, the Republican Establishment is going to have a meltdown that makes Three Mile Island look like a marshmallow roast."
"Why? Because the Establishment will be staring down the barrel of two utterly unpalatable choices. On the one hand, Gingrich's national favorable-unfavorable ratings of 26.5 and 58.6 percent, respectively make him not just unelectable against Obama but also mean that he would likely be a ten-ton millstone around the necks of down-ballot Republican candidates across the country. And on the other, Romney has shown in two successive contests -- one in a bellwether Republican state, the other in a key swing state -- an inability to beat his deeply unpopular rival. If this scenario unfolds, the sound of GOP grandees whispering calls for a white knight... will be deafening."

(15 posts)Ive been surprised that the media (online and TV) keep writing off Newt by saying Mitt is the inevitable front runner. The more they say this the more primary voters feel empowered to vote for Newt.

(276 posts)Fl is a close primary. This is the state that gave us Rubio, Scott, West, and defeated Grayson. Enough said. Gingrich knows how to play the tea party like a fiddle. He is devious, smart, and articulate. He is quick to response. Romney has memorized his talking points and when he goes off script he just blows it. With less debaters, they get to talk more and that will be to the advantage of Gingrich and disadvantage to Romney. The more Romney talks the more he blabbers and rambles.

(6,960 posts)I heard Larry Sabato on the Bill Press radio show this morning say that there are enough primaries yet to come (and still open for candidates to qualify for the ballot), that someone could still get into the race as late as March and still be able to get the delegates to become nominated.
I think Romney really is on the edge, if not already toppling over. His taxes will probably make him one of the most "unsuited to the times" candidates ever ... and a win by Gingrich in Florida will be devastating.
Gingrich cannot get elected and he is a disaster for down-ticket Repuglicans.
So, I predict that if Noot does win Florida, there will be a 'white knight' coming into the GOP contest next month. The downside for Democrats of the Repuglicans starting the nomination process so early is that they have time to repair the damage they have done to themselves so far.
Big question, of course, is who could this 'white knight' be? The GOP has such a shallow bench ... Sen. Thune? Jeb Bush? Mitch Daniels? Sarah Palin?

(17,493 posts)Romney is a their choice as he is part of the 1% and it is his turn. Newt is a loose cannon that might screw up all their carefully laid plans.

(15,071 posts)are respnsible for Gingrich's success. The fact that they ran Perry, Bachman, Santorum, Gingrich, and Paul shows where the "Establishment" is now. The crazies rule the party now; the "Republican Establishment" went out when the Teabaggers took over.

Frankly, I'd like to see Noot's birth certificate.
I'd like to see how much he weighed when he was born.

(1,451 posts)I actually believe they both are unelectable, mainly because they are not protestants and that is huge in the mind of a true american conservative. The media pushes their corporate candidate, even so called liberal msnbc. Our media is a joke, internet pundits are superior to those stenographers we have on teevee. It's just a matter of time for teevee to go the way of the 8 track tape. Things will never be the same as we leave the dark ages of propaganda behind. The religious nuts who play geopolitics with people's lives will the biggest losers, their little game is up.
