How Republicans hope to turn Islamic State into a problem for Democrats

http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/how-republicans-hope-to-turn-islamic-state-into-a-problem-for-democrats/2015/05/20/e8e3bec4-ff0b-11e4-805c-c3f407e5a9e9_story.html?hpid=z1

DES MOINES — One by one, nearly a dozen GOP presidential hopefuls took the stage here last weekend for a Lincoln dinner, each different in style and stature but all joining a rising Republican chorus that lays blame for the Islamic State terrorist group squarely at the feet of President Obama.

“If you fought in Iraq, it worked. It’s not your fault it’s going to hell. It’s Obama’s fault,” Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (S.C.) said to cheers.

Even the event’s timing — hours after U.S. Special Operations killed a key Islamic State official — did little to alter the pitch. “It’s a great day, but it’s not a strategy,” said former Florida governor Jeb Bush.

After more than a decade bearing the political burden of Iraq, Republicans are making a dogged effort to shed it by arguing that the Islamic State’s gruesome ascent is a symptom of Obama’s foreign policy, rather than a byproduct of the 2003 invasion they once championed.

Because they do. It's our job to keep the facts in front of the public.

Then we had no business, staying then, right?

Not to mention that pesky SOFA that Bush negotiated with Iraq in 2008 promising the withdrawal of our troops by the end of 2011. If Republicans think THAT was a mistake, will they care to explain just how long they think we should have been staying in Iraq?

What they seem to want but most won't advocate for is to put troops back into Iraq, which is likely to be a non-starter for most Americans at this point. We spent a lot of years, money, and resources trying to train up Iraqi forces and seem to be seeing little or no return on that investment.
