2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIs anyone else seeing what is happening with the GOP?
When I peruse other sites all I see is vicious name calling and absolutely no sense of cohesion. Romney is despised by conservatives, all of the whacko conservatives are despised by the more moderate wing of the party. Rush Limbaugh is slamming Newt Gingrich for his comments about Romney (thus forcing freepers to defend Romney against their demi-god which is, in and of itself, a schaudenfreude dream come true), Hannity is slamming Perry, turnouts for the two contests so far in Iowa and NH were absolutely dismal.
The teabaggers are gone, Palin is completely irrelevant (always was but now even the freepers have turned against her), Gingrich is going nuclear, Trump is threatening a third party run...
Such a great time to be alive! I'm going to savor every minute.

(28,755 posts)the republicans could fade to overall irrelevance, which they richly deserve. go the way of the Whigs and the Tories. disappear from the public discourse. leave some room for progress, maybe even peace seeking instead of war mongering. get some programs passed, put people to work, give everyone a little more day to day security.
it's like the GOP is working toward that day but the media just won't let them die.

(28,498 posts)Corporations work through the media to prop up Repubs. Eliminate the "middle man" and the GOP would vanish.
All one needs to do is watch the GOP "candidates" and hear what they say to realize it's all "much ado about nothing."

(36,286 posts)Republican out of habit, even as the party explodes. We've always thought of the Democratic Party as a coalition of varied interests, but the Republican Party is as well: Super rich and their lackeys ("the Establishment" , corporations, mean people from Main Street ("none of my money is going to those welfare frauds!" , thoughtless and/or ignorant people from Main Street, isolationists, empire builders, closet racists and out and out racists. What will really take the Party down is that more and more of the individual factions are in a take no prisoners, my way or the highway mode.
