2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe Speech has reached the American People!! CBS Poll about the speech
91 percent of those who watched the speech approved of the proposals Mr. Obama put forth during his remarks. Only nine percent disapproved. Last year, 83 percent of viewers approved of Mr. Obama's State of the Union remarks. This year, 82 percent of those who watched the speech said they approve of the president's plans for the economy, up from 53 percent who approved before the speech. Eighty percent said they approved of Mr. Obama's plans for the deficit -- in contrast to 45 percent before the speech. Eighty-three percent approved of Mr. Obama's proposals regarding Afghanistan, which received only a 57 percent approval rating beforehand.
Here is a great quote from Sullivan's summation of these poll numbers:
And who should really get a big part of the credit for turning America to the left? The Republicans who made Obama more liberal than he ever wanted to be. Congrats, guys. You may really be making history.

Whether Obama is ready and can deliver what he outlined in SOTU. I do hope that Obama has forgone his absolute centrism and not allow the Third Way persuade him into that trap again.

(1,751 posts)You want The President to do liberal things, give him a liberal Congress.
We already know what happens if we don't.

(602 posts)I saw on RawStory just now that they had the same numbers as you just posted BUT said the poll they used was from 2011 by mistake. Here's the link for that:

Like I said, the numbers you just gave and the numbers the 2011 poll gave are the same unless I'm mistaken.

(18,402 posts)Because there's no link, I don't know how varied this viewing sample was.
I know in today's world of cable and Internet distractions, not that many watch. And just as I don't watch the Republican debates, many Republicans probably didn't watch this either.
Still, I did see numbers from a focus group last night, which was skewed largely Republican (44%): and they gave the speech and its policies high ratings as well.

(108,973 posts)I know I couldn't stomach more than 13 seconds of the Repub answer -- so I'm guessing that those who watched Obama's speech were predisposed in Obama's favor.
