2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBad Democrat! NC Representative Becky Carney is an Imbecile
If you live in the State of North Carolina (As do I) or have been following the news you probably know about Senator Bev Purdue's murdered Fracking Bill veto. It was murdered by the illustrious Rep. Becky Carney, who 'accidentally' provided the deciding vote to cancel the veto!
So now, fellow North Carolinians, you and I have to contend with the threat of toxic seepage in our water supply. And if you live anywhere near me, in Fayetteville, you know that utilities providers like Public Works Commission (PWC) are already brutally unforgiving.
But don't fret- we have two years in which to get things straightened out. Personally, I can attest that Becky Carney is one Dem that I will NOT be voting for next time around. If I see her name on a ballot I'll certainly do my level best to vote her out, and I suggest my fellow North Carolinian Democrats do the same.
North Carolina is a beautiful state teeming with verdant natural diversity, culture, and history. I've always been proud to live in North Carolina and I would not want to live anywhere else. I personally will continue to fight the Fracking Bill tooth and talon until we've driven a dogwood stake through its heart and buried it face down in hallowed ground. I cannot, will not allow a hazardous and wasteful process like fracking to destroy this beautiful and historic state so that greedy GOP elites and continue to fatten themselves at my expense.
If you've followed the news the claim is that Carney's vote was an 'accident'; that she was tired and pressed the 'wrong' button. I am not sure if it was sedition or incompetence that caused this disaster but I assure you we don't need incompetence in our state any more than subterfuge. So fellow Democrats in North Carolina; I urge you to vote with me next time around (assuming this Representative quit her job-which would be just as well) and take this bungler out of our leadership system. Mistakes this costly are inexcusable in this day and age.

(3,894 posts)though the topic is very difficult to not have strong emotions about.
Apparently usually mistaken votes can be switched, but not if it changes the outcome of the overall vote. That sounds to me like a stupid situation. Either one should be able to change one's vote or not. To say only mistakes that have make no difference can be fixed is ludicrous. This is one reason I don't like electronic voting at all, if she had been responding to a voice vote, I'm sure she wouldn't have said it wrong. It almost seems as though NC, with their bizarre only if it doesn't matter routine, allows/encourages a certain amount of carelessness in the first place, then says, well unless it really matters, then screw you.
I think instead of being pissed at her, NCians need to go after this bizarre rule and perhaps electronic voting.

(397 posts)But personally I am not. I'm the one that's at risk for having toxic and largely undisclosed chemicals in my drinking water. I will not tolerate that kind of outrage under any circumstances. If America is said to be a Meritocracy in which we reward success passionately then we must also reward failure with equal passion. I'm sorry if I offend you but my stance remains unmoved.

(3,894 posts)thing. Honestly. There should be a way for some group to take this to court in that it forced a mistaken vote onto the record, that is only sometimes allowed to be changed, that's a fundamental problem with your system. Otherwise this could happen again, just saying, it's a flaw in the system, and in the human that made the mistake, but I wouldn't more be hateful over a mistake rather than trying to find a solution to the systemic problem.

(21,977 posts)No need to be harsh ...
All our elected reps have to do is VOTE. ONE THING. VOTE. If they can't get that right, they don't need to be in office.
I'm not buying the "oops" explanation anyway. Vote her ass out.

(21,977 posts)That is legislative incompetence, or dare I say, malpractice. If your doctor does it, likely someone dies. If your legislator does it, oh well, no problem.
Yes, there's a problem. It's called incompetence. Boot her ass out.

(3,894 posts)The problem is the system. I'm guessing then that you must be perfect and have never mis-typed, mis-clicked, or any similar button mis-push after working non-stop till 11pm?
Additionally I must assume that you see no systemic problem with a system that would allow for a split second mis-push to stand without other consideration?
No wonder NC has problems, seems it's citizens like to hold personal animosity rather than fix the actual problem exposed by this situation.

(3,894 posts)I am pretty sure our elected officials, right or wrong, do more than push a button. Really are you so angry and in your own personalized hate fest that you believe what you typed?

(21,977 posts)Her job is to VOTE. Sure there are plenty of things that go into that--listening to her constituents, considering the issues, but ultimately it comes down to voting, and that means pushing the damn button. If she can't do that right, she's the moron.
Is the system flawed? Yes. Did she know what the system was? Yes. Was she paying attention? I doubt it.
I still call it malpractice. If you want to call me names, you're no better than she is.

(3,894 posts)Perhaps that colors my POV, as well as the fact that I have no doubt in various electronic situations, pushed the wrong key/button/click, so I have a real hard time, knowing how this happened, holding another to a higher standard than is rational. The problem wasn't so much with her button push as it is with the rules that say a vote can only sometimes be changed regardless of how quickly one recognizes the mistake, which she said was a matter of seconds, but alas too late.
So either the change my vote rule needs to be universal, OR perhaps a confirmation screen before final vote tally, or something akin to an opportunity to review one's vote before sending it. None of this exists, so no I'm not being sarcastic, my heart goes out to her. I'm sure she is beyond mortified.

(397 posts)By then the damage is done though. I only hope it's not too late to veto this piece of crap again.

(3,894 posts)Geez, folks like you make it hard to see the diff between the supporters of each major Party. I'm glad that based on the low activity and recs on this OP, that a reasonable majority of our side can be upset, even angry, without being hateful and ridiculously hyped.

There are 67 republicans and the vote was reportedly 72-47 on one override and 74-45 on the other.
In the Senate, there are 31 republicans and both votes won with 31 votes... but only 10/11 votes against (when there are 19 Democrats)... so quite a few stayed on the sideline.

(397 posts)If it appears she's redeemed herself I'll forgive her. If she continues to perform abysmally then she'll get treated abysmally.
By the way friends, I don't post these things to spark flame wars. So let's keep the ugly reciprocation to a minimum please. We're all supposed to be on the same side.

(1,122 posts)Bev Perdue is not a U.S. Senator. She is the Governor of North Carolina. Perdue, who won direct promotion of election from Lieutenant Governor to become the first female Governor in the history of N.C., was elected to that position in 2008. This was the very night (Nov. 4, 2008) in which President Barack Obama won the state in a Democratic pickup, and Democrat Kay Hagan unseated in the U.S. Senate Elizabeth Dole (for the seat formerly held by Jesse Helms, who died earlier in that year). Hagan is the junior U.S. Senator, from the Tar Heel State, and the senior U.S. Senator is Republican Richard Burr (first elected to the seat previously occupied by John Edwards in 2004).
