Rachel Maddow Defends Hillary on Authenticity Issue: She Talks ‘Like a President’

by Matt Wilstein | 1:22 pm, September 4th, 2015 VIDEO

Screen Shot 2015-09-04 at 9.46.53 AM

............From there, Maddow moved on to Mitchell’s question about Clinton’s authenticity compared to candidates like Donald Trump, Bernie Sanders and even Joe Biden, who have an easier time connecting with voters on an emotional level. She noted that Clinton seemed to be contrasting her deliberate speaking style with the “loose talk, threats, insults” of someone like Trump. “The president of the United States needs to be careful about what he or she says,” Clinton added.

Paraphrasing Clinton’s point, Maddow said, “Listen, I talk like a president, I talk like somebody at the highest levels of government because I have operated at the highest levels of government. The reason I don’t rail and insult people and move people in an emotional way is because I’m speaking precisely and that should be seen as feature, not a bug.”

her reports, excited by his sizes. The next day nothing, she even took some time off, till things blew over. I lost all respect for her. She got the memo, when Ed Schultz got canned. Same with milk-toast Chris Hayes.
Just out of curiosity, what is your explanation? Be honest. I know it pleases you, but what do you really think happened?

People seem to like Trump because he appears to be decisive or something like that. Maybe "plain spoken" is the right term. It doesn't seem to bother them that President Trump would talk trash about other world leaders. In fact, I think they like the idea of calling Putin a drunk, Merkel ugly, etc.

Really. Though, it's not like we have a lot of Hillary talk to evaluate.....

"I was not thinking a lot when I got in . There was so much work to be done. We had so many problems around the world. I didn't really stop and think what kind of email system will there be."

http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2016-election/hillary-clinton-sorry-email-controversy-n421851

Being dismissive and saying "like with a cloth or something." Really?

But Obama is able to both talk Presidential AND sound authentic. It doesn't always have to be one or the other. Hillary is overly cautious in her openness at times and that does hurt her. If I'm forced to choose though I would take cautious over reckless every time. Trump is often reckless, Biden can be a little loose. Bernie can be controversial but his words almost always are in line with beliefs that he stands fully by.

Whether one agrees with President Obama on something or not, you get the sense that he means what he says and is honest.

Same with Bernie.

Clinton, not so much. I also remember all that non-specific, deflecting, neutral non-communications from the WH in the 1990's. That's what she conveys, rather than the more straightforward talk from the Obama WH.

People vote for a president or presidential nominee based on many factors. And first among these, believe it or not, is not policy issues. First and foremost, people assess whether a candidate has a presidential demeanor. Anger, gaffes, lapses, or spurious things such as accent or even looks, can derail a candidacy. I'm talking about how the average voter approaches a decision on who to vote for. If it doesn't look like a president and talk like a president and act like a president, it's probably not a president. (George W. Bush is clearly the exception, but the American people seem to have learned from that disaster.)

So yes, sounding calm, circumspect, clear, and even-keeled is probably a big plus in a candidate's playbook of campaigning.

I stopped watching MSNBC as much when Keith left.

Now that Ed is gone, too, I can't stand to turn it on. The few times I have, it's Trump, Trump, Trump, Clinton, Trump, Trump, Trump.

Pretty boring and millionaire-safe.

every show segment is a must see, but on the whole, the hour is worth watching. She has a keen intellect and a sense of humor that will bring on a chuckle or two.

The Fox folks and hate radio whackos can't stand her. Rachel's also a GOP nemesis, uncovering little known, embarrassing facts about some of their key politicians.

You mentioned Kieth Olbermann. I believe it was he who guided her into the MSNBC lineup.

Some of her segments were riveting, but others were rather childish.

Still, this isn't my point.

My point is that if I wanted to see Trump, I'd watch the other channels. MSNBC used to provide a respite form personality politics like that. Now, it doesn't.
