Sanders Pens Labor Day Op-Ed for HuffPo

Labor Day 2015: Stand Together and Fight Back

Labor Day is a time for honoring the working people of this country. It is also a time to celebrate the accomplishments of the activists and organizers who fought for the 40-hour work week, occupational safety, minimum wage law, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and affordable housing. These working people, and their unions, resisted the oligarchs of their day, fought for a more responsive democracy, and built the middle class.

Today we can - and we must - follow their example. It's time to rebuild the crumbling middle class of our country and make certain that every working person in the United States of America has a chance at a decent life.

Against overwhelming odds, the men and women of the labor movement changed society for the better. If you've ever enjoyed a paid vacation, a sick day, or a pension, they are the people to thank. And if you don't have those benefits on your job today, they are the people who can help you get them.

The economic reality is that while our economy today is much stronger than when President George W. Bush left office 7 years ago, the middle class is continuing its 40-year decline.

Bernie will become the best head of management this country has ever had.

He gets it.

better for workers than Bush.

I recall the fan base of another candidate saying that he was throwing Obama under the bus regarding this (and other) issues.

That doesn't appear to be the case.

Just wait for the time Obama throws his support to Bernie. The Bern will be nuclear!

I so look forward to that Spring time thaw!

Q And my other topic is the Vice President. At a fundraiser yesterday, he reportedly said, I’m not a populist, but Bernie Sanders, he’s doing a hell of a job. Does that also reflect the White House’s take on Senator Sanders?

MR. EARNEST: Well, I think the President has in the past spoken positively about Senator Sanders and certainly his service in the United States Senate. He is somebody who over the last several months, as all of you have noted, has been able to attract large, fired-up crowds of Democrats. That’s a good thing for the party. And the President is pleased that there is some enthusiasm and excitement on display about a variety of candidates in the Democratic field. And that’s going to lead to a robust debate and it’s going to lead to a strong general election candidate in the Democratic Party, and the President is pleased about that.

Obama already supports Bernie's candidacy.

Obama is not one of those reactionaries who are railing against Bernie, even going so far as to claim Sanders can't run as a Democrat. I guess they'll be throwing Obama under the bus?

with the DNC's blessing, that whole meme is a moot point.

Of course, I doubt the DNC thought Bernie would make this big of a splash.

it's what he didn't say. I'm quite impressed by this. And it's about time this happened. ABC news did a stint today on Bernie vs Trump. It's finally starting to happen, where people and the media are noticing. Once the ball gets rolling, look out.

Here's the good news: we faced challenges like these before in our history, and we won. We won when working people across this country came together - in the workplace, in peaceful demonstrations, and at the ballot box - and said "No more." That victory is part of what we celebrate on Labor Day.

By all means, enjoy the holiday weekend. But this Labor Day let's also honor the men and women who have fought for the rights of working people in this country ever since it was founded - by pledging to carry on with the work they've started.

I love that he calls for action from the American people, not just an "I got this"

The only way we are going to fix our problems is for everyone to take responsibility and get involved.
