It's OK to Support the Democratic Primary Candidate of Your Choice

on DU. It's fine to quote news items, polls, and other information that favors your choice. You'll be in good company. Others share your choice and also support the same candidate. You may encounter people who support some other candidate. They'll be doing the same thing in support of that candidate. That's all part of the bargain when it comes to primary elections. It's good to have strong feelings about the candidate you support.

It's not OK, though, to imply that supporters of a candidate other than your choice are somehow not real Democrats or are somehow stupid or ignorant for choosing a particular candidate to support. That's not OK at all.

It's not fine to try to silence supporters of a different candidate, either. That's decidedly the wrong approach and doesn't help your favorite candidate in any way.

It's not a good thing to insult supporters of a different candidate, ridicule them or attack them on personal grounds, either. That serves no useful purpose and actually does real harm.

It's good to be civil in our discussions about Democratic candidates. That lets us all extol their virtues and learn from each other. We're all Democrats here, and all of the candidates support most of the same positions on issues. That's why they're running as Democrats.

In the end, it will not be DUers who decide who becomes the Democratic nominee in 2016. That's something all Democrats across the country will decide in caucuses and primary elections in every state. That's our process. That's democracy. Once they do, we'll all need to come together to help the actual nominee win the election. That's what Democrats do. They don't skip voting. They don't trash the nominee over issues with which they disagree. Democrats work to elect Democrats.

It's good to be a strong supporter of your favorite candidate. It's not good to refuse to recognize that your favorite may not end up being the nominee. We won't know until the primaries are over and the national convention takes place.

I'm not really participating in the fray on DU. I don't see that it really reflects real-world conditions.

This OP didn't mention any particular candidate at all. It applies to everyone equally. Read it again, please.
