Sanders Responds to the WSJ on Single Payer

Bernie Sanders Responds To WSJ Claim His New Social Programs Would Cost $18 Trillion: "Over Exaggerated"

I think most of the expense that they put in there, the expenditures have to do with the single payer health care system. They significantly exaggerated the cost of that and they forgot to tell the American people in that article that that means eliminating the costs that you incur with private health insurance.

The truth of the matter is right now, as a nation, we spend far, far more on health care per person than do the people of any other nation and yet we continue to have about 30 million people who have no health insurance, many more who are underinsured and we pay, again, by far the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs.

No question to my mind that moving toward a Medicare for all single payer program is the most cost-effective way to provide health care to all of our people.

Also from Gerald Freidman:

These financial savings would be felt by businesses and by state and local governments who would no longer be paying for health insurance for their employees; and by retirees and working Americans who would no longer have to pay for their health insurance or for co-payments and deductibles. Beyond these financial savings, HR 676 would also save thousands of lives a year by expanding access to health care for the uninsured and the underinsured.

The economic benefits from Senator Sander's proposal would be even greater than these static estimates suggest because a single-payer plan would create dynamic gains by freeing American businesses to compete without the burden of an inefficient and wasteful health insurance system. As with Senator Sanders' other proposals, the economic boom created by HR 676, including the productivity boost coming from a more efficient health care system and a healthier population, would raise economic output and provide billions of dollars in additional tax revenues to over-set some of the additional federal spending.

This is accurate. All Democrats, actually all Americans (unless you work for a health insurance company), should embrace an effort to enact full universal single payer health care.

With the help of the political establishment the American health care consumer has been abused for far too long. This has bankrupted thousands, ruined lives and killed many. We must embark on a new path.

"for profit" means. When a private business runs a program it means that there MOST be a profit. When a government agency runs a program it does not make a profit.

Why is it so hard to understand?

At times they get a good story though most of the time they shill out right wing talking points. This is one of those talking points (single payer is too expensive). If we were to switch to single payer we'd destroy the private insurance industry overnight and of course it would be bad for business. Like everything else its going to cost money at first but the savings will be astronomical compared to the current system we have.

I thought these guys were supposed to be smart.

had fairly good news pieces, but that their editorial page decisions were made from a clown car.

However, he said that before Murdoch owned. He probably thinks the whole paper's run by the clown car, now.

I had an econ professor who made it mandatory for us to get the WSU since it would help with our assignments. I remember the "Markets want Bush" editorials that made my head spin along with the dozens of reasons why gas was becoming too expensive, as well as why we should invade Iraq. After that class I never picked up the urinal again.

The quality of Bernie's ideas and the increasing attacks on those ideas, just think that you've not seen anything yet.

if you are in NY and not registered as a Dem by the end of the month, you cannot vote for him in the primary election.

Great job DNC to schedule debates so late in the game.

A large portion of the VA's budget would be threatened mightily by Medicare for all.

The amount of money that could go to actual care in this country instead of shareholders pockets is staggering. Each dollar in return representing a denied cure, a grieving family and a life of pain for those in need.
