2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI think Hillary will have to reinforce a la Clinton/Gore '92 and pick a foreign policy VP
I think foreign policy will be a key issue in this election. It's clear Republicans will run on Obama's foreign policy. Hillary will have to defend it, as so Bernie, Biden, O'Malley, Webb, Chafee. I think Clinton will have to pick a vice presidential running mate with some foreign policy experience, like Biden was with Obama in 2008. Maybe former Ambassador Tim Roemer (D-Indiana); ; he was a former congressman from 1991 to 2003. I think if she picked someone like a Roemer or another foreign policy stalwart, it would bolster the ticket.

You pick a "foreign policy VP" when you have little foreign policy experience. Not when you are the ex-Secretary of State.

(755 posts)It would be a good choice. Clinton picked Gore in '92 to reinforce Southern Democrats in the White House. Hillary picking a foreign policy running mate would show Republicans that they are better on national security.

(26,549 posts)which means Bill Clinton had little foreign policy experience.
There is no one Hillary Clinton can pick who has more foreign policy experience. Picking a VP based entirely on foreign policy experience is a way to diminish Hillary Clinton. It's saying her massive experience doesn't count.

(12,081 posts)Reagan's trickle down economics have had on the average American. There is obvious anti-establishment in both parties and most of it is due to economics. If there is any attention given to foreign policy it should be about how our foreign policy costs us billions of dollars that could be spent on pulling Americans out of poverty.

(81,846 posts)Between Syria, refugees, and the specter of terrorism people will be focused on FP. It's the ground republicans will want to fight on and the big Democratic candidates don't have any signature domestic goals. Foreign Policy will continue to get headlines as long as Syria is brewing, refugees are fleeing, the Iran deal is being implemented, North Korea threatens, and Russia and China flex more muscle.
