(6,409 posts)He worked for this. He supported that. He helped with something. He spoke out about an issue. I once wrote a bill for the state legislature, lined up a few sponsors, helped get it passed, but that's not my accomplishment. I was a cog in the machine, an essential cog, but no more significant than the other cogs that meshed with me.

Burlington prospered with Sanders as mayor
http://www.opednews.com/articles/Bernie-Sanders-The-Mayor-by-Elizabeth-Balcar-Bernie-Sanders_Bernie-Sanders-2016-Presidential-Candidate_Prosperity-150907-934.html
How would a Bernie Sanders presidency revitalize America?
His mayoral legacy in Burlington, VT, offers a host of clues. In the 1980's, Bernie's visionary leadership transformed that city from a stagnant economic and cultural backwater into an economically vibrant and culturally dynamic community.
I watched him do it.
When I moved there in 1979, Vermont's Queen City seemed more like a downtrodden chambermaid.
The urban renewal craze struck Burlington in the 1960's. By the time the bulldozers finished leveling a 27-acre ethnic neighborhood between the downtown and the waterfront, the homes for 157 families, 67 individuals and 47 businesses were gone. The void left by the loss of this neighborhood contributed to a stagnant aura that enveloped the city and bore silent witness to the empty promises of affordable housing made by the city fathers and their developer-accomplices

Others accomplishments include:
being one of a handful to say that deregulating Wall Street banks would wreck the economy
being one of a handful to say that the Iraq War would be a horrible mistake
Things he didn't do include:
he didn't support a coup against a democratically elected government in Honduras
he didn't stand up for "traditional" marriage
he didn't push the TTP
he didn't push fracking and pipeline deals for the oil and gas industry...
not much time now but I hope others will contribute too

(23,867 posts)If I had to trust anyone in the White House, it would be Bernie. His moral compass points in the proper direction. No one else comes close. And then there's his stance on what will be a far friendlier economy. That is the single most important one for creating a better country.

(12,685 posts)Sanders has also passed an amendment to the Dodd-Frank bill that led to the first audit of the Federal Reserve. He and Sen. Robert Menendez secured funding in the 2008 stimulus bill for clean-energy initiatives. And he inserted language into the Affordable Care Act to increase funding for community health centers.
But as with Coburn, Sanders willingness to stand up and say no has also helped him to score victories on Capitol Hill. Sanders highlights his battles to prevent Republicans from cutting Social Security benefits as well as the complete decimation of the U.S. Postal Service.

~Snip~
The revitalization of VA reform legislation is an unsexy tale. It is the story of two lawmakers who swallowed their ideological pride to make moderate progress. But it also illustrates a defining paradox of one of the more dynamic figures currently in politics.
Bernie Sanders, the wide-eyed socialist running for president in 2016, just happened to produce one of the few -- and perhaps the largest -- bipartisan legislative breakthroughs in the last Congress.
~snip~
"The fact is, he was able to work with McCain across the party aisle and accomplish the most significant piece of legislation in the past year," Briggs said. "Yes, the bar is pretty low. But they got it passed, without much help from Paul Rieckhoff."
So far in his run for the White House, Sanders has spent little time talking about this or other elements of his legislative record. This is partly because producing legislation is an inherently unflattering process filled with messy trade-offs. But more to the point, it's not the most galvanizing part of his candidacy. It's better, after all, to warn of the ills of politics than to tout that you, too, know how to play the game.
"In given moments in my political career, we had to make compromises to get things done. And of course Ive done that. And I will continue to do that," Sanders said. "But at the end of the day, the way we bring about real change and the way we are most effective is by rallying the people to stand up and fight back."
Full article. (Well worth reading):

(58,354 posts)Illinois State Legislature what piece of legislation did he initiate which passed?
I checked Wikipedia and I'm sure there are more detailed articles about Lincoln but I couldn't find anything.
SUMMARY OF MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS
1. Abraham Lincoln made the decision to fight to prevent the nation from splitting apart.
2. Abraham Lincoln was an unfaltering commander in chief during the Civil War which preserved the United States as one nation.
3. Abraham Lincoln's foreign policy was successful in preventing other countries from intervening in America's Civil War.
4. Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation which began the process of freedom for America's slaves. The document also allowed black soldiers to fight for the Union.
5. Abraham Lincoln was a strong supporter of the Thirteenth Amendment that formally ended slavery in the United States.
6. Legislation Abraham Lincoln signed into law included the Homestead Act, the Morrill Act, the National Banking Act, and a bill that chartered the first transcontinental railroad.
7. Abraham Lincoln set an example of strong character, leadership, and honesty which succeeding presidents tried to emulate. Barack Obama stated during his campaign that he would look to Lincoln as a model.
8. Abraham Lincoln gave a series of great speeches before and during his presidency including the House Divided Speech, the Cooper Union Address, the First Inaugural Address, the Gettysburg Address, and the Second Inaugural Address.
9. Abraham Lincoln wrote a series of famous letters including the letters to Grace Bedell, Horace Greeley, Fanny McCullough, and Lydia Bixby.
10. Abraham Lincoln's quotes are among the most famous quotes in the world.
http://rogerjnorton.com/Lincoln87.html
Numbers 8,9 and 10 in some cases would apply to before Lincoln became President and they consist of speeches, letters and quotes.
Whether you've been in Washington a long time as in Bernie or a short time as in Lincoln, the major guiding point should be the content of a candidate's character and the merit of their ideas.
When you live in dysfunctional times and the majority status quo powers are arrayed against you, one must follow the beat of their own drummer until the parade catches up, this is happening with Bernie now.
Thanks for the thread, BooScout.
