Why Is Bernie Sanders So Silent On Hate Toward Muslims? After a week filled with Islamophobia, it's time for Sanders to take a stand.
By Zaid Jilani / AlterNet September 18, 2015
You would think that insurgent progressive candidate Bernie Sanders would be the one to speak up for the plight of Muslims. He is, after all, a genuinely anti-establishment figure with a strong history of supporting civil rights. But if Bernie Sanders even noticed this weeks spree of anti-Muslim hatred, he isnt showing it. He didnt offer any invitations to his Senate office, or deliver any tweets. He rarely speaks about Islamophobia on the campaign trail, and foreign policy merits barely a mention in his speeches.
When he does talk about Islam, it comes off as clumsy and ill-prepared, as if the senator has no knowledegable advisors on Islam or foreign policy.

She's on board with bombing their countries and putting more American lives on the line.
If this is what you are choosing to bash Bernie Sanders with, you chose the wrong topic to do it with.
But please, proceed, Governor.

(34,589 posts)Not leading the effort to destroy a country and kill hundreds of thousands of people is nothing compared to a well-crafted Muslim outreach policy.
Don't tell anyone, but we're reprising this:

(36,063 posts)or the media isn't picking up such comments. Sanders is getting a pretty cold shoulder from the media.
On the other hand Clinton's campaign regularly reacts to the news in a captain obvious sort of way. Its pretty easy to find her comments on stories where public sentiment is quite clear and she can link to it with a 'me too'.
Yet, she won't talk about things like Keystone, and TPP

(21,210 posts)can you at least pretend to pay attention!
Does the Hillary campaign really seek to divide along religious lines? This is what Trump is doing, do you want to continue this division with the Clinton logo?

Aisha... If HRC is the only one on our side, I think we're doomed. I'm not sure if she'll defend Muslims after election.
Zaid Jilani... Dear @BernieSanders, Muslims are being demonized in the same way people of your faith, Judaism, were for ages. Speak up. Love, a fan.

(1,151 posts)No candidate can take a stand on every issue every voter is interested in. Even if it's the hot issue of the week that's 52 issues over a year and voters will say they don't know what is important to that candidate he/she takes that many stands. And, "taking a stand" means putting in a significant amount of effort to make sure what you think isn't twisted or misinterpreted. It's very easy to "come off as clumsy and ill-prepared" if you don't think through, not only your position but the message you and your surrogates deliver.
Better to take a stand on the issues that are most important to the candidate and answer questions on other topics and let voters judge how the "stands" along with less-thought-through answers will translate into the issues each voter thinks is most important.

(45,319 posts)crimes. The OP wants rhetoric that is not helpful and which is not supported by the communities in the US which are most often victims of crimes motivated by bias against them.
Some perspective: Bias crimes in the US according to the FBI, break down in this way: the largest number of bias crimes against person are race based, and 60% of the victims of those race based bias crimes are black. African Americans get the worst of it. There are about 3,600 such crimes a year The next largest group of bias crimes are those motivated by bias against a person's sexuality. There are about 1,600 such crimes a year.
The third largest group of bias crimes are those motivated by bias against the victim's religion. There are about 1,300 such crimes making the FBI official list each year. Of those crimes, the religious group most often victim to bias crimes are Jewish people, who are victim of about 60% of the religious bias crimes. Muslims get about 15% of such crimes.
All bias crimes are bad. Not just some of them. All bias crimes are done by criminals. None are done by representatives of their communities.
But statistically, it is Bernie Sanders who comes from the religious group most often subjected to bias crimes in the US so it is odd to claim that he is the candidate who is least aware of such bias crimes and generalized bigotries. Very odd. Dubious in fact.

(46,179 posts)Perhaps you, and Zaid Jilani, just aren't listening when he speaks.
For example:
The ridiculous arrest of Ahmed and awful comments at @realDonaldTrump's rally show us we must stand strong against anti-Muslim bigotry.

"Lets stop the racism. Lets stop the xenophobia," he added.

It took me 10 seconds to find these references; there are more. AND, there are Muslims supporting Sanders. Apparently, they're feelin' the Bern, not hearing any silence.
