2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHillary Clinton in 2003: "I am, you know, adamantly against illegal immigrants."
Weve got to do several things and I am, you know, adamantly against illegal immigrants, Hillary Clinton said on the John Gambling Radio Show in 2003.
She went on to further say, "but certainly we've got to do more at our borders. And people have to stop employing illegal immigrants. Come up to Westchester, go to Suffolk and Nassau counties, stand in the street corners in Brooklyn or the Bronx youre going to see loads of people waiting to get picked up to go do yard work and construction work and domestic work."
Here's audio of the interview where that derogatory anti-immigration quote comes from:
Moreover, she sounded like Trump when she sternly advocating to build a wall between the US and Mexico. Here's the source for that: http://nydailynews.com/archives/opinions/border-battler-hillary-build-u-s-mexico-fence-article-1.594388
Ten years ago, a number of political experts said Clintons immigration stance was to the right of President George W. Bush and was even referred to as Pat Buchanan-esque. Conservatives thought they had an ally in Hillary Clinton on immigration. Here's the source for that: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/13/nyregion/the-evolution-of-hillary-clinton.html
As a U.S. Senator, Hillary Clinton supported the tracking of immigrants, tighter border controls, and identification upon entry and exit of the country.
When she was running in 2007 and 2008, Hillary Clinton took a firm stance against providing driver licenses for undocumented immigrants. Moreover, in her last presidential run, for a long time, she favored a path to legal status for undocumented immigration over a pathway to citizenship.
Hillary Clinton has stated anti-immigration positions as recently as last year as well. On June 17, 2014 Clinton expressed her desire to deport child immigrants from Central America: We have to send a clear message: Just because your child gets across the border doesnt mean your child gets to stay, Clinton said.
Here's more information about that, from a Vox article entitled "Hillary Clinton wants child migrants sent back. Here's what that would look like."

(310 posts)There's nothing wrong with changing your views, as long as your reason isn't "because I think this is what people want to hear."
Unfortunately, with Clinton as with Romney, I think that's exactly what's going on. I always tell people that Clinton is the Romney of the 2016 election cycle. Because, just like Romney, she's changed her view at least once on almost every major issue.
This really needs more exposure. We need to hold Clinton accountable to her past flip-flops.

(111,313 posts)Sanders position on immigration has been called complicated and he has been criticized by immigration activists for supporting the idea that immigrants coming to the U.S. are taking jobs and hurting the economy, a theory that has been proven incorrect. Both of his leading Democratic challengers, Hillary Clinton and Martin OMalley, have recognized that new immigrants coming to the country actually boost the economy. But Sanders continues to align himself more closely with Democratic positions of the past.
I frankly do not believe that we should be bringing in significant numbers of unskilled to workers to compete with {unemployed} kids, Sanders said. I want to see these kids get jobs.
Studies have shown that immigrants actually create jobs for American workers. Researchers recently found that each new immigrant has produced about 1.2 new jobs in the U.S., most of which have gone to native-born workers. And according to the Atlantic, an influx in immigration can cause non-tradable professions jobs like hospitality and construction that cannot be outsourced to see a wage increase because the demand for goods and services grows with the expanding population.
But Sanders fails to see it that way, pointing on Thursday to the 36 percent unemployment rate for Hispanic young people. You bring a lot of unskilled workers into this country, what do you think happens to that 36 percent?
Sanders poor track record on immigration goes back further than just his presidential campaign. In 2007, he voted against a bipartisan immigration reform bill sponsored by Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA). At the progressive Netroots Nation conference earlier this month, Sanders said the reform bill would have allowed for low wage workers to enter the country who would be competing against kids in this country who desperately need jobs.
But Sanders did vote for the 2013 immigration reform bill, which also included guest worker programs and contained most of the same measures as the 2007 bill that he opposed.

It does appear that Bernie's positions have evolved over time also.

(496 posts)For teens and young adults, which he had advocated for and that was relevant to his objection to the earlier bill. So, he's been consistent.
I get the sense this thread is confusing a number of different topics. sanders oppose the guest worker provisions of ye 2007 bill - that's allowing temporary residency while working, it's not a path to citizenship. It is purely what Sanders said it is: more competition for jobs by people who would be dependent on the good graces of the employer to remain in the country. That's a recipe for exploitation. sanders has recognized the economic benefit of illegal immigrants and voiced the same while supporting the DREAM Act.

Clinton's answer mirrored the Obama administration's tough position on how to deal with unaccompanied minors, who are entering the country through the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas at rates some have called a "humanitarian crisis." Those minors are put into deportation proceedings by the Department of Homeland Security, but then are transferred to the Department of Health and Human Services. That department looks for family members in the United States who can care for the children, although that does not mean they won't be deported later.

Touching the nose can indicate that the person has detected a bad smell. It is also common signal from a person who is not telling the truth.
When a person lies, blood vessels in their nose may dilate, making the nose swell or appear redder. The nasal engorgement then causes mast cells to release histamine, which makes the nose itch and so may lead to the person touching or scratching it (this is probably the basis of the Pinocchio story).
Rubbing the finger alongside the nose can indicate disagreement. It may also be a semi-suppressed nose-scratch related to lying.

I have news for her too about people having to stop hiring 'illegal immigrants'. I worked in Southampton and I can say that many of her wealthy friends in the Hamptons were hiring those workers. She most likely met many of them during her visits since all over that Hamptons
Those 'people being picked up on the corners in Nassau Co' to go to work in Construction and as Domestic workers? I met many of them, and who were they working for in the Hamptons? Many friends of Hillary's. I loved all of them, they were wonderful, hardworking people.

(62,325 posts)as she was talking about a War Crime, a horrific War Crime, and boasting that she had a lot to do with it. Horrible. Bishop Tutu and Nelson Mandela were horrified also, both saying that no decent person could see that and condone it any way. I respected them for saying what so many were thinking.
Shameful, and we are supposed to be okay with all this? Not going to happen.

(11,589 posts)can someone tell me what was wrong with the words that I heard?
We have an illegal employer problem in this country.
It means that employers are breaking the law by hiring illegal immigrants.
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)and saw the wealthy 'illegal employers' staffs many of whom were undocumented workers. And the way the Wealthy Employers get around any laws they might be subjected to, though never are, is to hire 'Contractors' eg, Lawn Maintenance contractors. They are legal usually, licensed etc, but they hire undocumented workers and everyone knows it. This way the Wealthy don't have to pay the rates they would pay an contractor who abides by the law. The wealthy are pretty cheap when it comes to money.
But we all knew the game and she's right, it needs to stop. It exploits the undocumented workers AND puts American workers out of business.
She might want to start in the Hamptons, it's notorious for illegal employers.

(62,325 posts)Sanders' statement on how the immigrant children were treated in this country when they were being transported by bus, was heartwarming, so different to Hillary's.
Another reason why I support him. He has true compassion for human beings a quality we don't see too much inside the DC bubble.
