Bernie Sanders: "we are far from eradicating racism"

Sanders: Charleston Shooting Reminder Of 'Ugly Stain Of Racism' In US

Presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) on Thursday condemned the shooting at a historically black church in Charleston, S.C. as a "tragic reminder of the ugly stain of racism" tainting America.

"This senseless violence fills me with outrage, disgust and a deep, deep sadness," Sanders tweeted.

In a longer statement, the Democratic presidential contender said the killings, which were blamed on a white suspect whose victims included state Sen. Clementa Pinckney (D), showed that the U.S. had a long way to go in escaping its history of racial violence.

"The hateful killing of nine people praying inside a church is a horrific reminder that, while we have made significant progress in advancing civil rights in this country, we are far from eradicating racism," he said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and their congregation," Sanders added.

Sanders denounces racism, divisive politics of Trump in address to La Raza

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is running for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016, addressed the annual convention of the National Council of La Raza on July 13, calling for comprehensive immigration reform and denouncing those who would divide Americans over race and national origin.

...

While “racism has plagued the United States since its inception,” Sanders said the nation has advanced. “We should be proud that in recent decades we have made real progress,” he said. But he cautioned that voices of division remain and must be forcefully rejected.

“Not Donald Trump, not anyone else will be successful in dividing us based on race or on our country of origin. America becomes a greater nation, a stronger nation, when we stand together as one people and in a loud and clear voice we say no to racism and bigotry,” Sanders said.

Hillary apparently has few core beliefs, instead relying on polling and others to figure out where she stands. She seems to have no instinct on the issues.

On African-American support for Democrats

Well, here's what you got. What you got is an African-American president, and the African-American community is very, very proud that this country has overcome racism and voted for him for president. And that's kind of natural. You've got a situation where the Republican Party has been strongly anti-immigration, and you've got a Hispanic community which is looking to the Democrats for help.

He meant that the country over came racism enough to vote in the first black president.

OTOH I'm heartened that this mounting panic shows there's little prospect of Sanders's upward swing buckling or of a Biden run stealing his thunder--Sanders supporters are the likeliest to be a tad cynical about such a bacon-saving move, let alone his old-style politics (plus of course he's been a Senate arm-twister rather than an active member, most people on the street just know him as the "Amtrak guy" and maybe as a vocal IWR defender, and he'd enter a primary without having done any campaigning and with his son fresh-buried)

I'll add that that sort of baiting WORKS because bringing up Hillary and Sanders' records becomes a defensive move, a response to an accusation saying that progressives will try to resist being called racist because according to some academese everyone's racist even if they're not or something

Bernie's critics don't give a damn whether he -- or "his supporters"-- are racist or not. The truth means nothing to them. They just hope AAs and other selected demographic groups will swallow their lies. They cynically use people of color without an ounce of concern for what happens to them. They care as much for AAs as they do for the truth, which is: not at all. They speak and act with total bad faith.

A hatchet job based on a deliberate misreading of a positive comment by Bernie. It also insults his intelligence -- and the intelligence of DU members! What a shitty thing to do. I'm glad someone called them on it.

There seems to be quite a bit of that going around. Either some of these people are by nature the sort one ought to avoid -- or they are so worried about their candidate's falling poll numbers that they will do anything, anything at all, to undercut the opposition.

Am reminded of the Olympic ice skater who had her boyfriend strike her opponent's knee. Ethics and self-respect gone out the window.

Yet somehow we are supposed to ignore this when we vote.

And who voted for option 2. Most of these people are members at that DU-bashing site.

Like someone said in reply to the OP: "I think either you have terrible reading comprehension or bad intention."
It also applies to them.

Some people deliberately try to be as ugly and abhorrent as possible. They stink the place up. Of course, they've said they don't like it here. If this is going to continue until the Primary, Skinner should invest in a caseload of site fresheners.

Does a thread move up to "the greatest" if it has a lot of replies?

I'm kind of tickled that you can read their crapola and just sort of play with it. In fact, you've got me laughing so hard the tears are flowing. Oh god laughter is the best thing. Reminds me of my ex who had a genius for making me laugh when I was really, really angry. Also brings to mind an Elvis Costello song "Well I used to be disgusted now I try to be amused ..."

Maybe that's the key. Less disgust, more amusement.

I try to make it a point to rec a positive thread about Bernie every time I see a nasty post about him.

Laughing at the spin artists and bullies is the best revenge.

They want us to be miserable.

But it's not working ----

Wish I could rec your thread more than once.

But I have a feeling it might be better for some of us to stay away from ugly commenters and ugly threads -- or at least get away for awhile. Perhaps that's what the "ignore" option is for. I remember an H supporter who said she trashed positive Bernie threads. That seemed sick. Something's unhealthy over there.

Anyway, thanks for setting the record straight. It needs to be done, even though the worst don't care what's true. At least others will know.

She didn't. She still doesn't.

And the fact that most Bernie supporters were all in for Warren makes the claim that they won't support Hillary because of sexism even more absurd this time around.

According to them not only does he think we've overcome racism he hates immigrants too.

I love the smell of desperation in the morning.
