Hillary Clinton Pitched Iraq As a 'Business Opportunity' for US Corporations

David Sirota and Andrew Perez: Hillary Clinton Pitched Iraq As a 'Business Opportunity' for US Corporations

When Hillary Clinton voted to authorize the war against Iraq, she justified her support of the invasion as a way to protect America’s national security. But less than a decade later as secretary of state, Clinton promoted the war-torn country as a place where American corporations could make big money.

“It's time for the United States to start thinking of Iraq as a business opportunity," she wrote in 2011.

The quote was included in an email released by the State Department Wednesday that specifically mentioned J.P. Morgan and ExxonMobil. J.P. Morgan was selected by the U.S. government to run a key import-export bank in Iraq and in 2013 announced plans to expand its operations in the country. ExxonMobil signed a deal to redevelop Iraqi oil fields. J.P. Morgan has collectively paid the Clintons and the Clinton Foundation at least $450,000 for speeches, and ExxonMobil has donated over $1 million to the family’s foundation.

Clinton’s comments pitching Iraq as a business opportunity for American corporations predated her declaration this year that her vote for the war was a “mistake.”

In the aftermath of the Iraq War, the Bush administration pushed to privatize wide swaths of the Iraqi economy. Many prominent political voices charged that the conflict was not about national security or a humanitarian mission against a dictator but was instead an attempt to use military force to open up Iraq’s closed economy to foreign corporations -- including oil giants like ExxonMobil.

In the email that referred to Clinton’s portrayal of Iraq as a business opportunity, the Clinton-run State Department called Iraq a “market where your companies can make money,” and said that in meetings with corporate executives, “U.S. government officials returned to the theme that the U.S. government stands ready to help U.S. firms operating in Iraq.”

Text of the email can be read here.

2003, Bush the idiot invaded, and screwed up Iraq, big time.

2011 ... apparently, America should NOT be trying to use business opportunity to help stabilize that country.

...anyone in the position of Secretary of State would have been pushing the same point. But the whole thing makes me want to retch. Money, money, money, pay to play, lather, rinse, repeat. No wonder the electorate is thoroughly disgusted. Maybe I'll make my fortune investing in pitchforks...

6. Iraq: Open for Business October 21, 2009

"Hundreds of Iraqi officials — said to be the largest delegation from Iraq ever to visit the United States — gathered in a hotel near Capitol Hill on Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss neither security nor American troop levels. Rather they came to promote something that was once, and might still be, more of a hope than a reality: investment.

“Why invest in Iraq?” Sami al-Araji, the head of Iraq’s national investment commission, asked the gathering on Tuesday in a crowded conference room at the Hyatt Regency. “There has never been a better time to invest in Iraq. Iraq has emerged from the conflicts of the past with tremendous potential for investment from local, regional and global companies.”

...President Obama’s national security adviser, James L. Jones, addressed the conference, as did Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who practically threatened investors not to tarry.

“In the words of an Arab proverb, ‘Dawn does not come twice to awaken a man — or a woman,’” she said. “The world is watching for every opportunity to invest in Iraq, and companies that wait too long may discover they are too late.”

Clinton urges U.S. companies to invest in Iraq
June 3, 2011

http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/meast/06/03/iraq.business.clinton/

"Iraq is open for business, and American companies should make an effort to invest there, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Friday.

"President Obama and I and our government believe strongly that expanding economic opportunity is as essential as building democratic institutions," Clinton said while surrounded by executives from companies as far-ranging as Occidental Petroleum, JP Morgan Chase, General Electric, Microsoft and Lockheed Martin, in a round-table discussion aimed at getting companies focused on commercial opportunities in Iraq despite its current "tough environment."

...With one of the largest customer bases in the Arab world, along with one of the best-educated work forces in the region, Clinton said, Iraq poses significant opportunities for American companies. The International Monetary Fund has projected for Iraq to grow faster than China over the next two years, she said.

The United States, through its embassy and consulates throughout the country, stands ready to assist American companies "to help create the conditions for investment and growth that will be broadly spread and create a ladder of economic opportunity for those willing to work hard," Clinton said. "Iraqis are looking to rebuild every sector of their economy, not only their oil sector but agribusiness, transportation, housing, banking and many others."

Absolutely sickening. With Democrats like that, who needs Republicans?

She's sorry for her IWR vote? I just bet she is. Look at how much money she and Bill have made from that vote!

And she's running for the DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION! Wow.

like Dahr Jamail, I never got them out of my mind and came as close to hating someone as I ever have when I thought of Cheney/Bush/Wolfowitz/Ledeen and all the other war profiteers.

No wonder they want us to 'forget about the Iraq War Vote.

RIP little children of Iraq! Some of us tried to stop them!
