Hillary Clinton Goes Big On Gun Policy, Creates Contrast With Bernie Sanders

She promises to take administrative action on background checks if Congress doesn't act.

CHARLIE NEIBERGALL/ASSOCIATED PRESS
Hillary Clinton will unveil four proposals on Monday designed to strengthen the nation's gun laws.

WASHINGTON -- Hillary Clinton will call Monday for substantial new limits on the availability and distribution of firearms, stepping aggressively into the debate over gun control in the wake of last week's mass shooting at a community college in Oregon.

The former secretary of state will outline four specific proposals during a pair of town hall events in New Hampshire, all of which are sure to inspire intense opposition from gun rights advocates. One of the proposals will put her directly at odds with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), her top competitor for the Democratic presidential nomination.

At the top of the list is a pledge to take administrative action if Congress fails to tighten the so-called gun show and Internet sales loopholes. Under current law, licensed dealers are required to conduct background checks and certify that potential buyers are not prohibited from owning guns. But unlicensed vendors, including some individual sellers at gun shows, don’t have to go through these steps.

Clinton plans to call for lawmakers to address the issue. But if they don't, she will require that anyone “attempting to sell a significant number of guns be deemed ‘in the business of selling firearms,’” which would “ensure that high-volume gun sellers are covered by the same common sense rules that apply to gun stores -- including requiring background checks on gun sales.” Asked what would constitute “a significant number of guns,” a Clinton aide responded, “There are a number of studies being conducted currently regarding illegal gun sales that could inform an eventual rulemaking.”

Such an administrative action would be a bold step, one bound to spark massive pushback. And it’s not clear how it would legally work. President Barack Obama said at a recent press conference he had exhausted all the tools available to him to strengthen gun control laws. Clinton’s campaign did not elaborate as to what legal avenues it is exploring.

That is already federal statute under current ATF regulation. There is a legal definition of that very thing. And it is a intrastate private sale exemption for the background check as it is a state issue. Any interstate sale to include over the INTERNET must go through an FFL and a federal background check performed and passed to receive the weapon.

Sanders stands with corps on guns, his votes shows this regardless of what the pitifully political NRA score

If there was a purity test on corporate interest Sanders would not pass especially on the issues of gun control

Sanders is for banning assault weapons, for removing military weapons from police, and for universal background checks.

He is also vehemently against the MIC.

So.

You're wrong.

Completely wrong.

Sanders voted against the pro-gun-control Brady Bill, writing that he believes states, not the federal government, can handle waiting periods for handguns. In 1994, he voted yes on an assault weapons ban. He has voted to ban some lawsuits against gun manufacturers and for the Manchin-Toomey legislation expanding federal background checks.

The talking point is that Bernie is a gun nut NRA shill.

Or in this case the progressive pro-gun control senator running for the Democratic nomination is a "tool" for the NRA.

This is the kind of swifboating propaganda we're up against.

Your SNL starring, Marc Anthony appearing, Ellen show dancing, "evolving" candidate never met a corporation she didn't like.

She'll say anything now to get elected and to use the recent gun tragedy to make points is just sickening.

You do know that she can't win, don't you?

Her time has passed, she's all baggage now and would be better suited to continued work in the family foundations.

She was running for Senator at the time, and she was there in support of gun control. This is not a new issue for her.
