2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBernie Sanders, Gun Nut, supported the most reprehensible pro-gun legislation in recent memory
http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/jurisprudence/2015/05/bernie_sanders_on_guns_vermont_independent_voted_against_gun_control_for.htmlWhen Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders jumped into the 2016 presidential race, he was widely hailed as a far-left socialist who would appeal to the liberal wing of the Democratic Party. A liberal challenge to Hillary Clinton, said Politico. True progressives liberal alternative, trumpeted FiveThirtyEight. But before liberal Democrats flock to Sanders, they should remember that the Vermont senator stands firmly to Clintons right on one issue of overwhelming importance to the Democratic base: gun control. During his time in Congress, Sanders opposed several moderate gun control bills. He also supported the most odious NRAbacked law in recent memoryone that may block Sandy Hook families from winning a lawsuit against the manufacturer of the gun used to massacre their children.
Sanders, an economic populist and middle-class pugilist, doesnt talk much about guns on the campaign trail. But his voting record paints the picture of a legislator who is both skeptical of gun control and invested in the interests of gun ownersand manufacturers. In 1993, then-Rep. Sanders voted against the Brady Act, which mandated federal background checks for gun purchasers and restricted felons access to firearms. As a senator, Sanders supported bills to allow firearms in checked bags on Amtrak trains and block funding to any foreign aid organization that registered or taxed Americans guns. Sanders is dubious that gun control could help prevent gun violence, telling one interviewer after Sandy Hook that if you passed the strongest gun control legislation tomorrow, I dont think it will have a profound effect on the tragedies we have seen. (He has since endorsed some modest gun control measures.)
None of these views are particularly shocking for a Vermont representative: Sanders deep-blue state has both high gun ownership and incredibly lax gun laws, and its perfectly logical for the senator to support his constituents firearms enthusiasm. And a close friend of Sanders once said that the senator thinks theres an elitism in the anti-gun movement.
But Sanders vote for a different kind of pro-gun bill is more puzzlingand profoundly disturbing. In 2005, a Republican-dominated Congress passed the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA). This law doesnt protect gun owners; it protects gun manufacturers, distributors, dealers, and importers. The PLCAA was the No. 1 legislative priority of the National Rifle Association for years, because it shields gun makers and dealers from most liability when their firearms are used criminally. It is one of the most noxious pieces of pro-gun legislation ever passed. And Bernie Sanders voted for it. (Sanders campaign has not replied to a request for comment.)

The challenge issued was "without links your chanting bullshit. let's see links to the 6 posts, identical to OP, on this day."

TexasTowelie
(111,313 posts)but the proclamation that you were somehow victorious and that the author should issue a retraction when you did not meet the conditions of the challenge are questionable.
Furthermore, there are no limitations on the number of times that a thread can be posted within the GDP forum so if a thread is posted once every three to four weeks there are no rules being broken. I'm sure that we'll also have plenty of posts about Clinton's votes on IWR and the email issues along with multiple posts about Biden's plagiarism issues if he decides to run.
I don't have any problems with you personally though. Everyone on DU is free to support whomever they like in the primaries. I have not made up my mind since I want to see if Biden enters the race and also listen to the debates instead of committing to a candidate this early in the process. At that point I'll decide which candidate aligns most closely with my views and also has the best shot of winning the general election because after spending the last 20+ years with Republicans in charge of my state the last thing that I want is for another Republican administration in the White House. I've gained a great deal of patience as I've grown older and being adamant about anything usually results in decisions that I regret.

(57,349 posts)Meh, I proved my claim and it's over.
A strawman since I never claimed any rules were broken.
The same idiotic article has been posted here repeatedly and every time the poster seems to think it's a GOTCHA moment.
Unfortunately for them the shock value has worn off and now my eyes just glaze over. So I respond with snark. This time I was nice and used Sesame Street to make my point.
See I get tired of seeing Bernie called disgusting names like "gun nut" and accused of everything from protecting pedophiles, to having rape fantasies and even being a Republican with his head between women's legs.
So maybe you can understand why I get defensive and maybe not, but I refuse to apologize for defending my candidate against smears. It's good practice for when the Republicans start swift boating him.
That's good, the feeling's mutual.

If they wanted to be taken seriously they should have chosen a different title.
Gun nut is a snarl word referring to a person (often, but not always, male and Republican, and usually in the United States, though they exist elsewhere) who not only believes in the right to keep and bear arms, but makes a point of doing so with gusto.
http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Gun_nut
1. A person who takes a keen interest in firearms and ammunition, possibly including the study, peer discussion, ownership, bearing and use thereof - usually used playingly by oneself or by other firearms enthusiasts in this sense. Often associates with people with similar interests.
2. A person who takes seemingly morbid interest in firearms out of a belief that they provide protection, security and freedom while appearing scary to the uninitiated - usually used derogatively by non-gun people, particularly those who are scared of firearms.

senz
(11,945 posts)because there are a slew of media sites, MSNBC included, who are jumping on that loser bandwagon. The establishment does not want a president who represents the people instead of them. They want either a Republican or Hillary -- which should tell you something.
But this gun business? It is so phony, so weak, that Bernie will easily demolish it. His record is actually very good, very reasonable, and defensible on guns. I don't like guns at all, but I don't fear or distrust Bernie on this issue. Thing is, some of us are liberal enough to live and let live. If someone wants to own a gun, I don't mind as long as they are mentally competent, not criminally inclined, and will own it safely and responsibly. This is what Bernie is for. Plus, we should not have automatic weapons out there, nor should we have high-capacity magazines, because no one needs these things for personal safety or hunting - and that's how Bernie feels. That's part of being a liberal: you don't try to force others to be just like you are. This is why a person can be heterosexual and yet support LGBT rights. Or be white and want the law to be protective of people of color against racism. Or be Christian and want the law to protect atheists and minority religions. You should think about this.
Remember that reasonable people will feel nothing but contempt for those of you who tried to push the "Bernie is a gun nut" meme. I personally will find it hard to forgive those who did it, no matter who wins the nomination.

(26,549 posts)There's an "alert abuse" link at the bottom-left of all emails. Alert on the email that contains the jury results. The Admins will be able to see who sent the alert and other information to figure out if this is someone who deserves some more attention.

(26,549 posts)I'd say something like "This appears to be abuse of the jury system, since the alerter did not want the post hidden".
Your words to the admin's screen.
This is the first time I've alerted on anything. If I'd known what was going on, I'd have voted to hide it.

(50,130 posts)that is some crazy stuff! I wonder how many variations of that have already been happening. Alert with crazy talk so there's no hide. Then nobody else can alert.

(26,549 posts)First, he misses out on potentially getting another hide, getting him closer to 5.
Second, someone else is abusing the jury system, and that will not be brought to light unless there is an alert on the results.

(12,530 posts)I've seen what you write at other websites, and it's not pretty (and nor is it something you're likely to have learned at church-depending on the church). So please do continue to show everyone what you practice, and what you preach, and we can know you by those fruits, sir.

(12,530 posts)In my case, I grew up in the church, and I've seen the hypocrisy from the inside. I don't know what sort of religion you practice--not my business. But I have seen that your faith is very important to you, and I've seen what you have written Over There. So I don't claim to be devout, but I wouldn't know anything at all about whether or not you were religious if you didn't mention it on a semi frequent basis. As the kid of a Southern Baptist minister who saw church-face and rest-of-the-week-face in a continual cycle, I know the delta when I see it.

(11,366 posts)You know how you have dreams which are about one thing, but then something else pops in them?
Last night I was dreaming I was attending a lecture. All of a sudden Bernie was there being "interviewed" by the professor and I just kept wanting to hug him. I mean, like you'd hug your parent. I just had the feeling in the dream that Bernie was just a good man who deserved a hug.
LOL!
senz
(11,945 posts)That sounds like such a nice dream. Stay in that good place.
As someone who is not much younger than Bernie, I'm in awe of how he has managed to remain committed to his youthful ideals, to live them out year after year after year, and I suspect that this much purity of spirit shines through a person and can be felt by others and that this may be part of his appeal to millennials. The compromises that most of us make as we go through life can, over time, form a sort of crust on our psyches, so we don't respond as strongly to bright, clear spirits as we once did. But young people can still sense and resonate to it.
I am grateful to have lived long enough to witness these events. The last time I saw an outbreak of pure goodness was the mid-1960s, and of course it didn't last very long. Nothing that special ever does. So let's enjoy this one and give it what we can.

Bernie's rationale on the PLCAA was (paraphrased) "you wouldn't sue the baseball bat company if someone hits you with a baseball bat." The video is on YouTube from his Arlington, VA rally from July. He tells a gun controller that they "need to learn to compromise".

(57,349 posts)Gun nut is a snarl word referring to a person (often, but not always, male and Republican, and usually in the United States, though they exist elsewhere) who not only believes in the right to keep and bear arms, but makes a point of doing so with gusto.
http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Gun_nut

If the Slate author thinks Bernie is a gun nut he is a moron.
