Des Moines Register: Hillary Clinton says she wishes super PACs were banned

Des Moines Register: Hillary Clinton says she wishes super PACs were banned

Hillary Clinton said Wednesday she wishes super PAC fundraising committees were banned, but she doesn’t intend to disown the ones supporting her while other candidates are benefiting from their own.

“I and others have said we’re not going to unilaterally disarm while the Republicans and the Koch brothers are out there raising money that they don’t even tell you where it came from,” the Democratic candidate told hundreds of voters gathered on the sun-dappled lawn of Cornell College.

Clinton was answering a question from Cornell senior Sam Stacy, who asked how she could “reconcile” her campaign’s finances with her calls for reforms.

However, she acknowledged that her cause also is being supported by super PACs, which don’t face such limits on donations, although they do report donations. “I would hope that we would get to a point where those would no longer be operating,” she said. “But that’s not where we are today, and the bulk of the super PAC money is on the other side with the Republicans.”

Super PACs are the only reason she's viable as a candidate. Without them, she would be unelectable.

It's 61% of voters.

http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2015/08/27/clinton-hits-lows-on-favorability-trustworthiness-in-poll/

The Quinnipiac poll found that 51% of voters have an unfavorable impression of her, her worst score ever on that measure. The poll also found that 61% of voters say she is not honest and trustworthy, another record low. On the honest and trustworthy question, that is up from 57% in a July Quinnipiac poll.

Clinton is opposed Super PACs, but isn't opposed to taking their money.

In all fairness to Mrs. Clinton, she may be correct that it's not possible to get elected to higher office in America without the backing of the wealthy and large money interests. In this respect Mr. Sanders' candidacy is a test of democracy.

Gandalf: Don't... tempt me Frodo! I dare not take it. Not even to keep it safe. Understand, Frodo. I would use this PAC from a desire to do good... But through me, it would wield a power too great and terrible to imagine.
