Doug Schoen: Hillary Clinton Veers Both Left And Right
Clinton is naturally more to the right of Sanders and Obama in these areas and for the general election thats certainly a good thing. But in this hotly contested primary, Clinton must also spread her platform to the growing liberal, progressive wave which Sanders has cruised in recent months.
In contrast to her prototypical moderate stances, three recent announcements have evidenced Clintons newly progressive efforts. She finally came out against the Keystone Pipeline after years of dancing around the issue. We all know that Clinton was formerly in favor of the pipeline as Secretary of State based on the fact that she approved it in its initial stages. Presently though, her shift on the issues satisfies the considerably large environmental advocacy base, which has long doubted her commitment to their cause.
All said, the coming months will test Clintons ability to tack left and right through uncertain waters. This difficult objective remains absolutely critical to Clintons campaign not only if she is to become the next US President, but the Democratic Partys next nominee. The naturally centrist Clinton will face greater challenges than ever before.
