Former campaign staffers say Bernie Sanders was abusive: "Bernie was an asshole"

By PAUL HEINTZ

<...>

According to some who have worked closely with Sanders over the years, "grumpy grandpa" doesn't even begin to describe it. They characterize the senator as rude, short-tempered and, occasionally, downright hostile. Though Sanders has spent much of his life fighting for working Vermonters, they say he mistreats the people working for him.

"As a supervisor, he was unbelievably abusive," says one former campaign staffer, who claims to have endured frequent verbal assaults.
The double standard was clear: "He did things that, if he found out that another supervisor was doing in a workplace, he would go after them. You can't treat employees that way."

Like several others quoted in this column, the campaign worker would speak only on the condition of anonymity, saying that to do otherwise would constitute "career suicide" in a small state such as Vermont. But others echoed the former employee's story, saying the senator is prone to fits of anger.

"Bernie was an asshole," says a Democratic insider who worked with Sanders on the campaign trail. "Just unnecessarily an asshole."

"He yelled in meetings all the time," says one of Sanders' former Senate staffers. "He'd yell, 'I don't want to hear excuses! I want to get it done!'"

He is focused on his own, highly worthwhile aims and he doesn't suffer fools or uncommitted workers gladly. If these workers who thought they were so badly mistreated wanted to quit, it seems to me they had that option. I'm glad to see somebody who is focused and one-pointed in his pursuit of justice for others. His handling of the BLM folks it seems to me shows his wisdom in handling situations as they arise. When he saw that the BLM folks had no intention of letting him speak, he left, and later when he had time to think and study the aims and grievances of the group, he changed his tune. He's the kind of guy who wants to get things done and he does. I don't think there's anybody right now who would have a better chance of dealing with the Billionaire Overlords than Bernie. I'm glad to see that he can be prickly at times. He also has shown that he is ready to change his tune when he realizes that he has been too quick to judge some person or movement or idea.

I would bet that he has been and is VERY supportive of those who share his "passions" for justice and the common man. Those who are just there to hang around and get a paycheck or who are only halfway committed to his goals might at times have gotten short shrift.

More power to ya Bernie.

Vs. A cast of wind-driven characters. I'll take that.

George Thabault, who worked for Sanders when he was mayor of Burlington, sees that as a virtue, comparing it to "what you would expect from a CEO."

"He was a good boss and a demanding boss, in a way," says Thabault, now an auditor for the state Department of Vermont Health Access. "Sometimes you had to remind him that tomorrow's a holiday, so that 4:30 meeting — maybe the team won't be in the best mood."

In his statement, Briggs wrote, "It is true that in taking on some of the most important issues facing our country that he demands a lot, but no more than he demands of himself."

THE FILTHY MOUTH OF HILLARY CLINTON

It is said that a measure of our character is how well we treat status inferiors – those whom we don’t have to treat well. By that measure, the character of the woman who has ambitions to be America’s next president is sorely lacking.

LANGUAGE WARNING!

“Where is the G*damn f**king flag! I want the G*damn f**king flag up every morning at f**king sunrise.”

-From the book Inside the White House, by Ronald Kessler, p.244 – Hillary to staff at the Arkansas Governor’s mansion on Labor Day 1991.

****************************************************************************

F**k off! It’s enough I have to see you shit-kickers every day, I’m not going to talk to you too!! Just do your G*damn job and keep your mouth shut.”

-From the book American Evita, by Christopher Anderson, p.90 – Hillary to her State Trooper body guards after one of them greeted her with “Good Morning”

****************************************************************************

“If you want to remain on this detail, get your f**king ass over here and grab those bags!”

Here's one..

Criticism of Sanders' leadership abilities is nothing new. Steve Rosenfeld, a former Vermont journalist who served as Sanders' press secretary during his 1990 House campaign, wrote a book about his first successful statewide bid. In Making History in Vermont, Rosenfeld levels a tough assessment at his former boss, who passed him over for a congressional job at the campaign's end.

"At his best, Sanders is a skilled reader and manipulator of people and events," Rosenfeld wrote. "At his worst, he falls prey to his own emotions, is unable to practice what he preaches (though he would believe otherwise) and exudes a contempt for those he derides, including his staff."

==========

Just to clarify I dont really think this is a big deal. Most successful politicians are intense and push their staff.

Honestly MM this is old news.

It's about to become a big deal, because I don't think anyone with this kind of a personality can get elected, and that's before the whole Socialist issue.

People don't want a curmogeon staring back at them on the TV screen for 4-8 years.

Both Clintons’ temper emerge as a theme in several interviews, but Hillary Clinton’s “had much more sustained velocity, for a longer period of time,” according to former White House Chief of Staff Leon Panetta. “She just let everybody have it,” Panetta recalled of one incident. In another incident, he recalled an aide telling him: “The First Lady just tore everybody a new asshole.”

Joan Baggett, who served as assistant to the president for political affairs, said people didn’t feel comfortable pushing back on the first lady, even when she was wrong.

“She would blow up over something that she misinterpreted. Again, you can’t take her on, that’s not my boss. You can’t take on the First Lady,” Baggert said. “I remember one time in one of these meetings where she was blowing up about [Bill Clinton’s] staff and how we were all incompetent and he was having to be the mechanic and drive the car and do everything, that we weren’t capable of anything.”

Baggert added that Clinton would chew out staffers in front of their colleagues, which made things especially awkward. “Sometimes she’d be in those meetings and I’d think, ‘Please don’t let her yell at me,’” Baggert added.

Good OP, I'm not taking anything away from the OP, but Sanders has been known as someone who is very impatient, irritable, curmogeonly, all of those things for a long time.

I just assumed his supporters all knew this already and that his supporters believed that he had some magical way for making it not matter, like the Socialism issue.

This is very interesting. His supporters here don't seem to have a clue about the personality of the person they are supporting. They haven't even gotten to the point where they are magically explaining it away as an issue.

This doesn't surprise me at all. Of course, I worked at a political consulting firm for over 10-years. I've been called a fucking asshole by my boss in front of all of my colleagues. It isn't the most pleasant experience in my life, but I respect this person more than a lot of people I know. It's not a personality trait I ascribe to, but I also know I worked hard as hell and the firm was extraordinarily successful.

I have very few purity standards for my elected leaders. I know most of them have been incredibly flawed individuals. I am much more interested in results and I'm quite happy to elect an asshole who I believe is fighting on my behalf, rather the rest of the gang who are fighting for their rich friends.

Fri Oct 9, 2015, 05:46 AM
Oct 2015

Regnery, of course, in which unnamed Secret Service guys claim she was a "nightmare" to guard. The book claims they (and the WH staff) were not allowed to speak to her, and had to hide in cubbies as she came down the hallway. He also "reports" that when one SS guy said, "Good morning," once, she snarled back, "F*** you!"

I don't believe that crap about Hillary or anonymous smears against Bernie. I suspect both are capable of getting short-tempered and snappish from pressure and exhaustion sometimes (they're humans, not saints or robots), especially if some staffer is negligent, incompetent, or lazy, but I seriously doubt they could be that nasty without our hearing about it *before* it looked like one of them might be positioned to become president.

‘GOOD morning, ma’am,” a member of the uniformed Secret Service once greeted Hillary Clinton.

“F— off,” she replied.

That exchange is one among many that active and retired Secret Service agents shared with Ronald Kessler, author of First Family Detail, a compelling look at the intrepid personnel who shield America’s presidents and their families — and those whom they guard.

Kessler writes flatteringly and critically about people in both parties. Regarding the Clintons, Kessler presents Chelsea as a model protectee who respected and appreciated her agents. He describes Bill as a difficult chief executive, but an easygoing ex-president. And Kessler exposes Hillary as an epically abusive Arctic monster.

“When in public, Hillary smiles and acts graciously,” Kessler explains. “As soon as the cameras are gone, her angry personality, nastiness, and imperiousness become evident.”
He adds: “Hillary Clinton can make Richard Nixon look like Mahatma Gandhi.”

Saying "Fuck of"f to a person who protects you is just beyond being an abusive asshole
