As a mother paying off Parent Plus loans and watching my kids try

most college students have to work more than ten hours a week to eat and pay rent...are they supposed to work another 10 hours on top of that?

while others are hustling to fit time for homework around the job they need to eat and pay rent as you say. I'd really like to know how every student at a public college is going to find a job for 10 hours a week!

I think it is good to a point. However, it depends on what you want to miss out. I missed a ton of parties and hanging out but in the big thing of life is that enough not to work? I don't know. Sometimes I wonder how it would have been not to work and just have fun. It is on my mind from time to time. But overall I was better off because I had no loans. This was from 1988-1992 for Bachelors at Florida State and then 1998-2000 for MBA at George Washington which was not cheap. It definitely is an individual decision and the long term effects will always be different. 10 hours a week doesn't seem unreasonable but are their enough jobs on campus for every student to work? Probably not.

because there just wasn't time to work and do all the homework involved in an engineering degree. I was able to quit, but how many others have to work and have to eat a lower GPA because of it?

I majored in education not to say it's fluffy but it's not science or math intensive.

Did the same thing only worked almost forty hours part time and damn near around the clock during Semester Breaks and Summers. Had to stretch my four year program to five because of the required class prep time which there was never enough. But,hey,I did it. Irony was,year and half in the field,and I had enough,made a career change and never looked back. But friendships last a lifetime.

students are taking huge loans and have to work too already (unless their parents can supplement them)

unless students are living at home while attending college their living expenses are nearly as high as their tution

Ideally, a student would have a paid internship while in college, earning college credits and networking to start their career.

But most internships are unpaid.

it's a great idea. Driving around delivering pizzas as one kid did doesn't add much to the college experience, IMHO.

Her continuous refrain is 'pull up your bootstraps' with references to how responsible SHE was is straight from the talking points of the right wing who do not want ANYONE to get ANYTHING 'for free'. But mainly for the same reason Hillary talks this way, to provide cheap labor for McDonalds and Walmart et al.

She however was fortunate enough to have parents who could pay for her tuition. Don't know what she worked at while in college.

I think it can be unfair to presidents kids to automatically think they get a full ride due to name and not academic record.

the chance to go to school without the stress of starting out with huge college debt and while they're there, not being pressured by trying to hold down a job at McDonalds or Walmart et, which sure isn't going to add much to their resumes.
