Why do we care who "won"?

Isn't the purpose of a debate to convince people to switch which candidate they support? I know the early debates also serve the purpose of introducing the masses to a candidate and their message. I discovered that I really don't like Jim Webb nor Lincoln Chaffee, so I guess the debate served that purpose.

Did anyone here change whom they supported because of the debate?

1. "We" don't but the mainstream media sure do

They could barely wait until the debate was finished to inform us how one particular candidate simply crushed all opposition. In nauseatingly glowing terms, too.

2. Nope. In matters of conscience the law of majority has no place. Gandhi
