Democrats Name Clinton The Debate Winner In HuffPost/YouGov Poll

Tuesday's Democratic presidential debate on CNN did what debates usually do, according to a new HuffPost/YouGov poll. It allowed the two leading candidates to make a positive impression on an audience of millions.

More critically, however, the debate allowed front-runner Hillary Clinton to boost her standing among a far bigger base of support, making her the clear winner in the eyes of most Democratic voters.

A 55 percent majority of registered Democratic voters who watched the debate said Clinton won. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who saw a surge in online interest and fundraising, was a distant second, with only 22 percent saying he was the best of the night.

Clinton also saw an uptick in the proportion of Democrats who say they want her to be the party's presidential nominee. Before the debate, 44 percent of registered Democrats said they wanted Clinton to be the nominee. After the debate, the figure had risen to 52 percent.

The HuffPost/YouGov poll consisted of 1,000 completed interviews conducted Oct. 13 and Oct.14 among U.S. adults, using a sample selected from YouGov's opt-in online panel to match the demographics and other characteristics of the adult U.S. population.

And among those who did, about half only watched parts of it. A large majority of the people polled either watched clips of the debate, heard about it in news stories, or didn't know anything about it. How can you decide who won the debate when you don't even watch it?

Among Democrats:

22% watched the whole thing
16% watched parts
18% watched clips later
21% read about it in the news
23% haven't heard anything about it

Among Independents:

10% watched the whole thing
12% watched parts
14% watched clips later
19% read about it in the news
44% haven't heard anything about it

This is the fourth scientific poll to confirm the obvious, as polls did after Obama/Romney 1.

No one talked of "focus groups" and "on-line" polls then....another thing about science is that science takes TIME....who has that when you are on-line and need the answer STAT?!

As soon as you answer my question...what is scientific about that?

It's a joke to think it is scientific to select people who volunteered on a web site to give an opinion and claim they represent the population at large.
Do that with any other scientific endeavor and you would be laughed out of the room.

claimed to have watched the debate, and 33% hadn't even HEARD of the debate happening (yet they selected the winner?). Check it out for yourself here, Question 2: http://big.assets.huffingtonpost.com/tabs_HP_Democratic_Debate_20151015.pdf

Further, according to the poll only 38% felt Clinton won the debate, not 55% (see page 3 of the poll).

This poll is absolute garbage and means absolutely NOTHING.

How do you construct a debate poll where the majority of respondents will rely solely on Name Recognition in making their choice for winner of the debate. Simple, choose a vast majority of respondent who didn't bother to watch the debate, and didn't even KNOW there was a debate.

if you didn't bother to watch debate how can you say who won.it's not like the debate didn't get a lot of viewers. That is very flawed.

If people actully said they watched debate and she won i would accept that.that's not what is happening.

15 million viewers even more than 2008 primary debate viewers at peak and they can't reach people who watched them? and that isn't even talking about those who streamed it or saw it on youtube.

a clear choice going in to a debate.

So if we listen to MSM, especially the few we trust, we ALL tend to let that influence us more than it should, human nature.

I think both of them did so well that to pick a winner is counterproductive.

It says that of those who did, 55% found Clinton won. It could mean 100 people watched and 55 found Clinton won or it could mean all 1000 watched and 550 found she won.

It's still far more useful than an unscientific online poll.
