I don't think complacency is the thing. Ryan should be completely squished now. We need to court seniors

This situation is somewhat different then Palin. Palin didn't bring anything to the table, but an attempt to bring women and young men into the repub fold. Ryan brings a whole bag of mixed problems. Medicaid cuts for the poor ( poor and under waged earners will go to Obama). Tax cuts for the wealthy, tax increases for middle class ( unless you are an i-robot, middle class will come to Obama), Medicare - private plans for 55 and younger ( many seniors may not be total affected by this , but 55 and younger will). I can also see seniors over 55 not happy with this either. One thing that strikes me about this whole plan and the hypocritical stance of the Repubs... One of their main talking points is... "We should not burden our grandchildren with our debt", but under the Ryan budget, most seniors grandchildren will need to spend more for healthcare, more in taxes and more for education.... Sorry Repubs but you are saddling your grandchildren with a debt burden...their own plus some

And I agree that Palin was a craven attempt to capture Hillary's energizing of women to the 'pubbie fold. Ryan, too, is a craven attempt to keep the tea baggers happy. The 'pubbies know that the tea baggers are, probably, the last "revolutionary" gasp of their movement. They have nothing after those loons. And the baggers are flagging badly on Rmoney. He just doesn't get them fired up for obvious reasons. The pick of Ryan is the only option to seem both genuine in conservative bona-fides and keep the baggers happy gobbling the red meat.

The pick of Ryan is throwing caution to the wind and doubling down on far-right lunacy that middle America, independent America, and liberal America loath. All the GOP has left (after you subtract the various non-white blocks) is the older angry white male vote and the women they abuse. The baggers would have stayed home, they may still, but Ryan gives them a reason to crawl out of their homes and shamble to the polls. Ryan also gives the wacky social conservatives a chubby too. Now the 700 Club can crow about how good and God-fearing the ticket is and they don't have to awkwardly dance around the Mormon issue.

So Ryan is just there to keep the base from abandoning them. That's a sorry state of affairs for the GOP if they have to go to these measures just to keep their "safe" voting blocks.

Which is exactly what the Obama campaign wanted to make the election about in the first place.
