2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forum"I'm thinking about voting for Newt INSTEAD of Romney", said my Repub husband
this morning. Now, I have been married to the man for almost 38 years. He KNOWS we are not on the same page, Partywise or otherwise, on our political views. I usually just keep quiet when he watches Fox and rants about Obama.
This morning was different. I told him, "Oh, YES." "Vote for NEWT!" He didn't even blink. Are Republicans really that clueless? Wouldn't YOU think why is my Democrat wife telling to vote for Newt instead of Mittens? Did he think I LIKE Newt? Did he think I would VOTE for Newt? Does he believe in the TOOTH FAIRY? This just shows how gullible Republican voters really are. He came back and said he cast his vote for NEWT.
While this one vote won't make a difference, it does to me. I'm baaaaaad. I'm baaaaaad.

(27,787 posts)I ask because the DOW is up like 5000 points since the day Obama took office. If he is a socialist ... Obama SUCKS at it!!!
And when I ask my GOP friends that question, and then point out the reality, they stutter and start to drool.
Its great fun.

I have asked my gay friends in Florida to vote for Santorum today. They agreed, it's the best way to shake up the statistics of a Romney victory by having true liberals vote in the Republican primary, (I guess they already figured that there was no Dem primary so they re-registered or did whatever they had to do.)
But really, how people can be married for years and years with a Republican spouse, that still amazes me.
I don't, honestly, know how that would work out. Personally, politics and liberal causes have been so much a part of my being since my 21st birthday, when Gene McCarthy was around, I cannot imagine living under the same roof as a Republican.
I once lived for a year and a half with an independent, a lawyer, who quickly became a Democrat after Nixon was impeached or whatever.

(14,337 posts)and only voted twice in all those years for a Republican while in New York. Our two children became Democrats before I did. So, Daddy is outnumbered in this family, including his son-in-law. His future daughter-in-law, our gay daughter is engaged in NY, is also a Democrat.
I, and WE, do our best to counter Daddy. Hell, we outnumber him just in our immediate family. He can rant and rave about his Republican views, but it does no good at all in our family. Thank MOM, even as left leaning Independent, for raising Democratic children. For what is it worth, I cannot see how any gay person can possibly be a Republican.

(2,261 posts)He was embarrassed by Nixon and the Republican appologetics over him, and Ford's pardon of Nixon, the 73 oil embargo, etc, woke him up. Republicans hadn't shown any sane leadership over America since Eisenhower.
Republicans seem to live with "free market" mythologies, they seem to think Democrats are somehow destroying the free market by regulating it. They honestly believe these mythologies, Joe Scarborough is a prime example of such simple-minded knee-jerk thinking.
Republicans fell in love with profit-making, and they simply cannot admit that there is a valid role for government to regulate, or to promote greater opportunities for the nation's citizens. Republicans simply shut down when it comes to favoring anyone's rights, other than those of the corporation, the small business, or the concept of unfettered rights to profit.
As for gay folks, obviously there's no political party looking out for their needs 24/7/365, but I doubt many Republicans would actually go out on a limb in a national election for gay rights. And we have literally dozens of Democratic gay elective office-holders, and then there's all those Republicans who claim to have found Jesus once again after being outed in a men's room, or something. For us LGBT folks, the only logical, but skeptical choice is a Democratic leadership, carefully monitored, and challenged to advance the rights of all others.
