(885 posts)Bernie has drawn in large numbers of disenfranchised already (which makes up 66% of the total voters). He's drawing large interest from independents and is even siphoning interest from Republicans. He has proven in his own state in various races he can win over large blocks of independent and Republican voters with his view points (which haven't changed in decades). The head to head polls against Republicans show him favorably (equal or better than Hillary in many cases).
If you don't like his positions, I get that. If you think he's not the best option for the country, I understand. But how exactly is Bernie unelectable? Are you implying the Democrats wouldn't support him in the general election over a Republican?
Kang Colby
(1,941 posts)But considering he will get so few votes, he is also unelectable. I can't imagine him winning a single state outside of Denmark.
RichVRichV
(885 posts)that Bernie won't also get in the general election. Are you saying Democrats wouldn't vote for him if he's the nominee? Are you saying she has wider appeal among independents and Republicans? Do you think she will draw out more current non-voters than Bernie?
I have seen nothing anecdotal nor in the polls that states Bernie would have a harder time in the generals than Hillary would. It's simply a myth that he's unelectable. Both are capable of winning the general election.

(16,161 posts)I'm donating every month anyway, but not getting my hopes up. The TV performers are paid to disinform, and they will do so when the time is right. And the American public is incredibly susceptible to media manipulation.
smiley
(1,432 posts)And she IMO might as well be a Republican. See, I'm allowed to say that, because I'm one of those registered Independents who is tired of voting for the lesser of 2 evils. And that's exactly what we'll get with Hillary Rodham Clinton.

(11,833 posts)is no Margaret Thatcher.
Hillary is closer to President Obama and Bernie Sanders in her political ideology and policy than she is to the Iron Lady. Thatcher was closer to Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush.
TheKentuckian
(25,020 posts)Sanders is the only one you named that is left of western center and he is actually just moderate left.

(11,833 posts)Most in the western world would say Reagan, Thatcher and Bush are conservative while Obama, Clinton and Sanders are liberal.

The simple fact is that on economic issues the mainstream Democratic party now is where the Republicans were 30 years ago. That's how far right we've drifted.
We can't have an honest discussion on liberal vs conservative without breaking apart economic and social views. We have always been much more liberal on social issues (at least since the southern ideology switch in parties). That's held true under Obama. However, our party has become much more like old Republicans on economic issues (and the current Republicans have gone clear off the deep end). That's not an indictment on Obama. He has simply matched a trend of Democratic leadership over the past 30 years. Hillary's views align with his. Bernie is the only one looking to do an about face on our economic policies back to the left.

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Wed Oct 21, 2015, 08:14 AM, and the Jury voted 1-6 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Revolting. Sometimes it's hard to believe this is a Democratic website.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: I did not like some of the cursing BY ANYONE. But I feel the poster was egged on to get to the point where the poster could be hidden/banned.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: well said
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: A couple of words used are a bit crude but nothing you wouldn't expect in a robust discussion.
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Post offers an opinion on HRC, no personal insults were directed to other DUers. There is no inappropriate name calling here. HRC is a public figure, not yet the nominee and not yet subject to special protections.
Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

Democracy isn't about swinging from one cult of personality to the next.

(36,392 posts)She loses to Sanders on every issue. The only reason to vote for her, unless of course you're a conservative, is her gender. I think the authoritarian DLC wing of the party has come to believe that perpetual war is good, that Americans don't deserve healthcare, that wall street should run the country, that teachers unions are why our education system is so awful, that social security should be privatized, and all of the rest of the Fox world view. Then they complain when people don't vote.

(12,843 posts)I greatly admire Frederick Douglass.
Hillary lost my vote, my trust, and my respect when she voted to give GW Bush authority to invade Iraq.
She is terribly unqualified to be president based on her foreign policy record, which her supporters inexplicably point to as one of her strengths. She's "strong" on foreign policy in the same vein as GW Bush -- ready and eager to flex military muscles in the next costly fiasco laden with unintended consequences.
The military industrial complex and Wall Street undoubtedly would no doubt be pleased to call her Madam President.
