Senator Claire McCaskill's responses to Todd Akin

Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill (D) said in a statement Sunday that comments made by her Republican opponent Rep. Todd Akin about "legitimate rape" were "beyond comprehension":

"It is beyond comprehension that someone can be so ignorant about the emotional and physical trauma brought on by rape," said McCaskill. "The ideas that Todd Akin has expressed about the serious crime of rape and the impact on its victims are offensive."

1. She should remind everyone of his ignorance every chance she gets.

His remarks were worse than willful ignorance. What he said was hateful ignorance.

I thought she would lose in 2010 but she didn't.

I just hope that the good people of Missouri will NOT vote for Akin.

very conservative district, much easier to be partsian kook (and win) in a House race....Bachmann would never win a senate race, not in MN. anyway..

But in MO. senate race, McCaskill has to be the faovrite now...Akin's remarks were among the most vile I've ever heard a senate candiate utter..

2. McCaskill needs to follow Sen. Bennet's strategy

Here's my suggestion to the McCaskill campaign as to how to win the women's vote by large numbers the way Bennet did:

Liberal third party groups called Buck extremist. Bennet focused on attacking Buck’s views on abortion, which he believed should be banned including those of cases of rape and incest. He was also attacked for wanting to eliminate the 17th Amendment and refusing to prosecute an alleged rapist as Weld County district attorney. Planned Parenthood mounted a mail campaign, targeting women voters with the warning that "Colorado women can’t trust Ken Buck." Bennet won the women vote by 17 points according to exit polls. After the election, Buck conceded to the Denver Post that the main reason why he lost is because of social issues.

5. Akin also thinks marriage should be a license for a man to rape his wife

TPM points out that Akin has a history of controversial positions on abortion. As a Missouri state legislator, Akin questioned an anti-marital rape law over whether it might be misused “in a real messy divorce as a tool and a legal weapon to beat up on the husband,” but eventually voted for it.
